Hello! So I was admitted to UCSD to the Roosevelt College as a psych major. I visited the capus through Triton Day and fell in love with what the school has to offer. My questions are:
- How hard is pre-med at UCSD? I’ve heard that pre-med is notoriously harsh at UCSD and aggressively weed out prospective pre-med students…
- For ERC, how does pre-med work? Are there academic counselors that help you with scheduling your classes and stuff for pre-med courses?
- How difficult is MMW for pre-meds? I heard the GE’s at ERC are really difficult so I’m worried that it’ll conflict with my pre-med studies T.T
If ANYONE is a current pre-med student at UCSD (even better if he/she is in ERC) then please give your feedback! I really need it to decide whether to commit to SD or not.
Revelle first year pre-med bioengineering major here.

Medical school is hard everywhere, and pre-med study is intended to determine which students are prepared for it. Consequently, pre-med is difficult everywhere, including UCSD. There are a few key weeder classes, including Ochem, but the school takes in a breadth of pre-med students and churns out med school acceptees each year.

Academic counselors for ERC and the university are always available to help with scheduling your classes, and always do so for your first quarter. As with all the other colleges, pre-med at ERC just means you take certain additional classes that are recommended or required by most med schools. You also build a resume, volunteer, take the MCAT, and apply to schools. There is a large pre-med support structure among the various student organizations, academic departments, and college advisers.

I’m not in ERC, but my understanding is that MMW is a challenging sequence unless you like history. Luckily, as a psych major you won’t have too many required major classes, which will allow you to take the pre-med ones that you need. Each college’s writing sequence will do its damage on your GPA (perhaps more so within ERC because of how many courses there are), but as long as you keep your science/engineering GPA you can still have a solid shot.
