The title says it all. I'm a definite pre-med and I was wondering if I should pursue a pre-professional or a bio major, because they both have different recommended schedules.

I would go with biology, the courses you take will be more rigorous and I think they will prepare you better for medical school. Also, if you don’t get into med school on the first try (rare for an ND student, but possible) or change your mind about medical school, but find you are still a science-minded person, you will have other job opportunities in the scientific realm or the possibility of going to grad school in biology or a related field. A “pre-professional” degree will not necessarily give you those options. Also, if you start biology and decide to switch to pre-professional, your classes will all count towards a pre-professional major. If you try to switch the other way around, many of the pre-professional courses will not count towards a biology degree and you might have to retake them. Also, if you are interested in doing any scientific research at ND, professors are more likely to want to work with you if you have a real science major.

I agree with the poster above–if you have any qualms about if you can get to medical school, stick with a Bio degree. You CAN still get research as a pre-med, though–it just takes more digging.
