Pre-med books

I wanted to learn more about the whole med school application and pre-med process. Is there any book that anyone has read and would recommend? I am looking to become just a family doctor or something like that.

"Planning a Life in Medicine" by the Princeton Review is awesome.

I agree with iridescenthope. Excellent book.

the aamc guide is supreme

-On Call, about residency
-White Coat, a female doctor @ harvard med school
-Just trying to save a few lives, an er doctor

There are a lot more books along this lines but i havent had a chance to read them all yet. these ones are really good though, no fiction, straightup truth about the tough years in medical school

I've read a couple of pre-med and med books (including White Coat which was pretty good). The one book that I would recommend for what you want to know above all others is "Getting into Medical School today." You can find it at just about any major book store for around $12-14. Its not too long. It gave me tremendous insight into premedicine.

Becoming a Physician : A Practical and Creative Guide to Planning a Career in Medicine is my #1 pick. A great book that talks about everything from high school to practicing medicine.

If you click on the Big Guide to Med School on the left hand side, that can walk you through 4 years of premed. (I believe it was a book that was published online)

hey impactangel. It is funny that you posted that link, because i just found out about that website right before you posted it. It is such a good website. I didn't want to post the name on here, because i was afraid that CCers were gonna infiltrate (not sure if that is the right word) that website and clog their message boards with topics about whether they think they will get into "Blank" Medical School. I was going to keep it on the DL, hoping that other CCers wouldn't find out about the site. (You can edit your last response so that we can keep it to ourselves)

but aren't we here to here to help each other?

"i was going to keep it on the DL, hoping that other CCers wouldn't find out about the site." sounds shady as hell to me.

torres-

If you're not here to help your fellow CC'ers, I strongly suggest and HOPE that you leave.

Thanks for posting the link, impactangel.

wow! it was a joke... the only reason i wasn't going to put the link to the website wasn't because i don't think that other people shouldn't be helped, it is just because sometimes I find it annoying that there are so many people on this website that are so worried about whether the B+ that they got in 4th grade is going to affect their chances of getting into Harvard. And to the post about how everyone on this website is trying to help one another, are you sure about that? I remember when I came to this website, i actually did post my stats to ask whether the other ccers think that I could get into UNC, UVA, or Rice. I am not one of those people who had 1600 SATS, Valedictorian, 2000 volunteering hours, I was a person with a (relatively) low SAT 1250 (eventually a 1300) good GPA 4.24 at the time, and good ecs. Now the helpful members of ALL told me that I would hava a hard time getting into any of these schools. Pretty much that these were all huge reaches for me. None of them said that I should not apply, but it seemed kinda inferred. So anyway I got into all of these schools. Pretty much if I had listened to the other CCers I would not have bothered to apply and would be at U of A (not a bad school but not a school I want to go to).

The whole thing about the website was just that as I was looking through their website, I found the message boards incredibly helpful, as well as the big guide on the website. The only reason that I was "not going to help other CCers" by telling them the link was because I have seen many of the posts on this website and they seem really useless (like the ones about whether an applicant has a good chance at "blank" university). Heck, I have posted some stupid threads also. I know that there are other really good, informative threads here too. I am just saying that I think the website is probably as good as it is because it isn't full of people asking questions about needless things. that is just my opinion (I have not actually gone through each thread on that website). i am sure that I probably offended a whole bunch of people with this post. And I get the impression from previous posts that people that read this website cannot be told anything bluntly without getting their feelings hurt. So i am probably going to stop coming to this website because it kinda has outlived its usefulness to me.

I don't understand why the link is gone from impact's post. Can someone post it again please?

Edit: Never mind I don't need it anymore.

To anybody else who wants to know the site, I would post it but the moderator edited it out of impact's post so I'm assuming it's not allowed for some reason. But to find it simply go to google and search "Big Guide to Med School" (including the quotes around it) and it will be the first search result.

ummm....no

I don't think you can post links here which is why the good doctor/moderator edited the post. If you want, you can PM the person for the link.

nice save torres, and thanks for insulting a majority of the people who post here. :)

how so? I am just curious to know what part of my post would insult a person. Is it the part that I said that I think that there are many posts on this website that seem useless? i would like for everyone (I am not allowed to single someone else, because I might be censored or my post might be deleted like three of my posts have already been on this topic) to think about some of the past posts they have posted (if you can't remember you can look at your previous posts by clicking on your name and then clicking on find more posts by this user). Look at mine! I know that I have done some stupid posts. I am going to try to stop that so that I won't be a hypocrite.

cut your lossees torres
