Hi! I am planning on pursuing a pre-med track and I need some help deciding where I should go. I have been accepted to and considering:
-University of Pittsburgh
-Michigan State
-Miami University
-University of Miami (spring acceptance)
-American University (spring acceptance)
-Purdue
-UMass Amherst
I am looking for a school with access to a hospital and research.
Where do you feel the most comfortable to be successful? Which school is the lowest COA? Which schools have the highest percentage of students accepted into med school? What is the strength of their pre professional advising? Which school allows undergrads access to research in STEM labs? These are things that you must investigate with each school individually.
I’m a current 4th year medical student. Most important thing for getting into medical school is going to an undergraduate program where you can perform well. It doesn’t matter the name of your school it matters whether you can maintain close to a 4.0 GPA and get the best prep for the MCAT. So pick a major you like and can succeed in. You can major in anything and still be pre-med if you take the requirements for medical school.
Having good advisement and research opportunities is a plus, but not required. So go where you see the best fit (and where you may get a decent financial aid scholarship if money is a factor). Based solely on reputation I would go with either PITT or University of Miami. But UMASS amherst is good too. Where you go to college may dictate the state you get more medical school interviews from, so take that into consideration as well.
