Perhaps the two things that I am most passionate about are writing and medical science, so when I found out that “pre-med” is a track and not an actual major, I was ecstatic. But I was wondering whether or not majoring in a non-scientific field would at all affect me when I (I know it’s a long way off, but still) apply to med school?
No, it wouldn’t. You can major in anything you want if you want to go to med school. As long as you get the prerequisites courses required for most med schools and to be well prepared for the MCAT you’ll be fine.
It is also the same for law school and business school.
Major in what you like but take the prerequisite courses.
The premed core is made of 2 semesters each of biology, chemistry, physics, and English, plus 1 semester each of calculus, statistics, biochemistry, organic chemistry, psychology, sociology, a diversity-focused class, plus “recommended” but not mandatory proficiency in a language spoken by an immigrant group (such as Russian, Hmong, Creole French, Portuguese, Korean, Urdu…) which can be obtained through community education and volunteering. You also need volunteering and research experience, and a strong MCAT score.
English is a great major - English majors who complete the premed core have actually higher odds to get into med school than biology majors!
