Pre-Med Major?

I am currently a high school senior looking to go to the University of Kansas to major in pre-med but was wondering if I should major in something that is somewhat related to the medical field while taking classes that could possibly get me into a medical school?

My courses throughout high school have included rigorous classes in math and science and carrying on a weighted gpa of 3.6+.

Pre-med is not a major first of all… And u can major in anything to get into medical school… But u must take the prerequisite classes of medical school…which your college counselor would help u with…Now being a biology major would help a lot on mcats n even in medical school… But u should pick a major that u want to spend 4 years studying

Take any major you want, so long as you can fulfill the premed requirements alongside it. Many people on here would recommend that you take something other than premed (it is a major at some schools, dannymanny, though very few have it), biology, biochem, or any other closely related field, unless you have a passion for it and plan on continuing in it if you don’t get into med school; even then, you may want to think twice. These are all popular majors for premeds, and as such, your outlook in these fields - with or without subsequent graduate degrees - doesn’t look the greatest, as you will be competing with many great but not-quite-great-enough students who also didn’t get into med school and will be doing much the same thing as you (finding a career in a field already saturated with failed premeds).

…That was all doom and gloom. :stuck_out_tongue: Just make sure to have a solid backup plan or two, and you’ll be fine!

KU doesn’t have a true “pre-med” major, some colleges do. Here is their suggestion for taking classes: [KU: Pre-Medical Advising](<a href=“KU PreHealth Home | Pre-Health at KU”>KU PreHealth Home | Pre-Health at KU)
