Pre med options for transfer from UCSD

Hi Everyone,

I am a freshman on pre med track in UCSD with physiology and neuroscience major. After two quarters, I became more depressed and anxious because I am having a very tough time adjusting to the UC environment. The academics here is hard, but I personally think is doable. I don’t mind spending a lot of time on academics, but the problem is UCSD is a very very big school. I feel very insignificant in here when professors and classmates don’t really care about you since there are hundreds of people in the lecture. Therefore, I am planning to transfer out to a smaller college or university that has more discussions on science topics with peers and professors, instead of discussion session only serve the purpose of obtaining good grades.
Please comment if you guys have any suggestions for me !

It’s a little bit hard to gauge your options without knowing your current academic standing. What’s your college GPA? Highschool GPA? Test scores? In terms of financial situation, are you able to realistically afford out-of-state tuition?

What I will say is that UCSD is a great place for premed; it’s a research powerhouse, in a great city, and has a great medical school. Transferring to a smaller school may better personally suit you, but can be limited in opportunities as a premedical student. I would look into smaller schools in the UC/CSU system.

Best of luck!

What can your family afford to pay? Start with that. There are lots of nice, small colleges all over the place, but most of them don’t have a lot of financial aid to give out to transfer students.
