Pre-Med, Psychology, and Fine Arts

Hello all,

I'll eventually go to Medical school to become a doctor or surgeon, but right now I'm trying to decide what to do and where to go for my bachelor's degree. So far I've mostly looked at the UK and Australia, and I'm not too familiar with the US universities, so please pardon any elementary-sounding questions.

I am pretty keen on doing psychology as a major, while minoring in something artsy like theatre or film. Or I might double major with psych and arts, if that's possible. Is it?

Are there universities which offer psychology as a pre-med track? I'm not sure what the proper term for that is, but basically I'm looking for a psychology major that's "tailored" to include all the medical prerequisites such as bio and chem.

If there isn't such a thing, then: is it humanly feasible to study a Psych major + fine arts major/minor + get my medical prerequisites?

And as a general question: Do universities let you choose any combination of major/major and major/minor? Or can you only choose from their list of combos?

Any information, tips, and pointers are welcome. Thanks in advance!

My understanding is that as long as you take a few required science courses you don’t really even have to be a science major to go to medical school. So you should be able to major in psychology and add in the required science courses with a fine arts minor. Most schools allow you to choose your major and minor or your double major and will not limit you to certain combinations, but you have to consider what curriculum requirements or distribution requirements the school has because it can be difficult to do it all. Some schools that have no curriculum requirements are Brown and Amherst and I think Wesleyan has limited requirements. Brown and Amherst and maybe Wesleyan have neuroscience majors which might interest you. Try looking at the websites for a few sample schools to see what their psychology majors require. The pre-med section of CC might be useful too.
