pre-med schedule, study-abroad

I’m currently a pre-med sophomore with a few questions / uncertainties about my remaining 2 years. Just for some background, by the end of this year I will have completed bio, chem, math, orgo (including labs). Physics is my only remaining absolute requirement, but I’m minoring in bio and want to take physiology, biochem, and anatomy. As for my questions:

I’m planning on taking a year off between graduating college and medical school. This means I can apply regularly and ask for a matriculation deferral or I can apply a year later. Because I am interested in studying abroad I am curious what my schedule would be like over the next few years if I applied a year late. When would I take the MCAT?

The reason I ask about applying a year late is that I feel like taking the MCAT during the summer before senior year (and studying late spring semester and during the summer) would work better with studying abroad. I’m planning on taking either physics 1 or physics 2 at a local university over the summer. I’m not sure which would be better? (studying abroad fall or spring)

I plan on doing humanities electives while studying abroad, but I’m wondering if anyone can suggest a place where I could take a bio elective like biochemistry or anatomy or something.

Thanks in advance.

You would apply a year later. There are students who get can defer entrance from medical school for a year or more, but it’s generally for people who get some sort of post-graduate scholarship or something like that. If you apply a year late you would need to take the MCAT by the spring or early summer of your senior year of college at the latest. But the best advice for when to take the MCAT is whenever you think you’ll do best at it. If you’re able to study this summer and take the MCAT in August or something before you go abroad, those MCAT scores will still be good when you’re applying the summer after your senior year because MCAT scores are good for three years.
