Pre-med schedule

Is any current pre med a ucsb able to answer these questions?

1) I plan on taking Chem 1A, Math 3A, and Phys6A for my first quarter. Is this a good idea? I just don't want to deal with physics my sophomore year with ochem and bio.

And where do you fit in the time to fit in all the GE's?

Like 6 writing classes, and all those.

Taking a schedule like that first quarter is risky considering you haven’t adjusted to the amount of work needed for college classes (let alone college science classes). Just be aware that you’re going to have to study like crazy.
In terms of fitting in GEs it’s honestly not an issue. You’ll have plenty of time for them. Just make sure you do the writing requirement by the end of 2nd year and you’re solid. I’m doing a Microbio major, comp lit minor and still taking GEs and I’ll graduate in time. It means taking some summer classes but summers in SB are the best. If you ever want help going through scheduling or classes or just general questions feel free to message me!

If you have already taken AP Calc, AP physics or AP Chem in high school, then the transition should be somewhat easier. If not, then you will have to put in the extra time to learn the material thoroughly.

I just went to the Freshman Orientation yesterday and we signed up for classes. One thing they stressed is that they don’t want freshmen to overload themselves their fall term, so they limited us to 14 units at the most, and won’t let you take more than TWO section C classes (science and math classes). So they’re not going to let you take all 3.

They give you a list of about 60 classes to choose from. Chem is on there, but only for science majors. Physics is NOT on the list. I saw A LOT of really upset students and parents because all of the physics classes were full and off limits to freshman. Math 3A should be fine as long as you passed the online calculus placement test. If you took the Calc AP test this year (like I did), they WILL NOT let you take a math class.

Math classes, English classes, psych classes, and poli sci classes were all off-limits for me because I took the AP tests this year and the scores aren’t official yet. Basically I was stuck with science and the arts for my first quarter.

I think that your list of classes is good for a first quarter, except for physics (I think that it’s off-limits for freshman fall quarter?). If you haven’t gotten your writing requirements out of the way yet, I suggest you sign up for Writing 1 or 2 first because the writing classes fill up first. Also, if you took AP test for math and passed it, you should definitely sign up for the next math class in the sequence.

You can take whatever classes GOLD lets you take, regardless of what the person checking your schedule says to you. I know that I changed my schedule the day after orientation so that I took 17 units, most of them science/math classes. As a pre-med major you should also look to sign up for Chem 1AL too.

The point of Orientation is to address questions just like these. Although you may have AP/Honors experience in the classes, so do most other incoming freshmen. They stress not to overload cause they’re seen it before. Balance is key, especially for your first quarter. Speak with the advisors and don’t do more than 14 units.

Hey, so I was planning to do premed at ucsb but I am not sure if I can get in. What kind of sat and gpa did u guys get in with for ucsb premed?
