Hi, I am an incoming freshmen and currently trying to join certain classes. I am still undecided about whether I should major in Business Administration or take classes in preparation for Medical School. My schedule was going to be

Chem 1A (3 units) I thought it was 4 but it only has 3? This is the ONLY class I am actually enrolled in
Physics 8A (4 units) I am thinking of taking it along with Chem 1A, is that a good idea?
Math 1A (4 units) full, wiat until Phase 2?
Spanish R1A (read and comp req.) (4 units) still waiting for my AP results
UGBA 10 (3 units)

So I joined Chem 1A, but the class hours conflict with UGBA and Math 1A classes. Two of the math classes are not full but the discussion sections are. What should I do? Should I wait until Phase 2 and then try to enroll in Math? Should I change my Chem class to another hour (although I hear the professor Stacy is really good, so I wanted her class) so I can get into UGBA?

That post is rather confusing, so let me rephrase and make it more current

Enrolled Classes:
English R1A (might drop, waiting for AP results)
Chem 1A

Plannign to take (and why I have not enrolled):
Math 1A (it is full, the only class I can waitlist on conflicts with my Chem 1A time)
UGBA 10 (conflicts with Chem 1A)
Physics 8A

Should I stay with what I have and wait till Phase 2? I really want to take Math 1A, anything I can do or should I wait until Spring 12 to take it?
Also, is it worth it to change my Chem 1a class so UGBA 10 fits in my curriculum? Apparently the chem teacher from the class I am in is really good?

Chemistry 1A is only 3 units because the lab is separate (Chemistry 1AL).

You can major in business and do pre-med courses as well. Doing pre-med can be done with any major that leaves enough elective space in which to take the pre-med courses.

However, I would not suggest adding physics 8A along with with Chem 1A and calc.

Add the chem lab (Chem 1AL) - you need both the chem class and the lab to satisfy med school requirements.

You can attend any lecture of Chem 1A regardless of the time you sign up for - therefore change the time while you still can, to leave room for your other classes, if it bothers you, but as long as the only conflict is with the main lecture section (not the discussion section), you shouldn’t care about the theoretical conflict.

You might check into Math 16A instead of Math 1A - it satisfies those med schools that require calculus and is also accepted for admissions to Haas for the biz admin major you might pursue.

If you take Chem 1A, Chem 1AL, Math 16A, English R1A and UBGA 10 you will have a full schedule that moves you along for the Haas application you will submit when you get to 60 units and have finished all the prereq classes, and it keeps you on track for med school.

Ok so now I am in:
Chem 1A (3 units)
Chem 1AL (1 unit)
English R1A (4 units)
Spanish 24 (1 unit)
total: 9 units

I can only add 2 more units. My main problem is math right now. Some classes are not full, but the discussions are. Will they open more in Phase 2?

I’ll take your advice, rider, and not take physics with chem, their finals are next to each other.
As far as Chem goes, I wanted to stick to that time since it is the time that Stacy lectures, and I hear she is very good? But that is also the time the only UGBA 10 class is at.
And for Math 16A, I took an exam and they say Math1A is more suited for me, since I already took Calculus during HS.

Thanks for the clear up ucbalumnus.

I hear doing both business and premed at the same time is hard, so I might just pursue premed while taking some business classes to learn about it.

yes, wait for discussions to open and check often. right after my calso on june 17th, i checked twice a day for discussions to open and sure enough, two more opened about a week later and now my schedule’s perfect. be patient, ad be proactive!

If you are considering taking a more advanced math course than Math 1A, take a look at the sample final exams found here: [Choosing an Appropriate First Math Course — UC Berkeley College of Engineering](http://coe.berkeley.edu/students/current-undergraduates/new-students/choosing-an-appropriate-first-math-course.html)

You still need to choose some major; pre-med by itself is not a major. Many pre-meds choose biology majors, but, while that can make scheduling easier (a biology major automatically covers the pre-med courses) and does not have the uncertainty of having to apply to declare the major like business does, the courses themselves are generally regarded as being more work than those in the business major. Also, biology majors who do not get into medical school do not have the greatest job and career prospects at the bachelor’s level.
