Hi,
I will be applying to the VCU guaranteed admissions program and was interesting in majoring in Biomedical Engineering. Basically, I want to know whether it would be worth my while to double major in Computer Science as well (I have taken CS A & AB in HS)?
// I only want to keep my options open by majoring in CS ...

Also, what is the job scope for BME? - if I wasn't able to get into the guaranteed med program ?

I don’t think it’s too wise to double major in BME and something else. BME is a very demanding major, and it’s not that I’m telling you that you can’t do it, but if you’re going to go the pre-med route you would want to have a super high GPA and focus on your MCAT.

I just posted about following your passion on another thread, but seriously, just follow your passion. I chose neuroscience because I loved it, but there are plenty of pre-med students out there who chose English or philosophy. If you truly like BME and comp sci and aren’t merely double majoring because it “looks good” then that is what you should do. No matter how difficult the subject matter is, if you are passionate it will be much easier to apply yourself. Yes, you need a strong GPA and MCAT to get into medical school, there is no denying that, but you also need an undergraduate degree. Pick one, pick both, do whatever you want. Just be conscious of why you are choosing to study those areas.

also make sure not to bite off more than you can chew! In other words, you may wish to major in one field and minor in the other. Keeping a high GPA takes a bit of work, plus you will need to spend substantial time exploring your interest in medicine-shadowing MDs volunteering in clinical situations. Then its nice to work in some time to just relax and enjoy yourself.
