Pre-med Switching Majors Sophomore Year?

So I want to major in Chemistry as a Pre-med student, however I understand that pre med is hard and not that many people make it. My understanding is that most of the weeder courses are taken Freshmen and Sophomore Year. Would it be possible to switch from Chemistry to Mechanical engineering in the Spring of Sophomore year if I don’t have a med school worthy GPA? Would I have to take an extra year to graduate? I don’t want to start out in engineering because med school is the main goal and an engineering course load would make it harder to get a better GPA.

Possible? Probably, although at many schools you may have to transfer into it.

Will it take you longer than four years? Most likely, especially if you don’t take the engineering prerequisites while you are majoring in chemistry. It may take longer than 5 years, even, depending on the schedules at your college.

You could also just stay a chemistry major, if you are actually interested in chemistry.

Thanks for replying @juillet. I wouldn’t have a problem with staying a chemistry major if it wasn’t for the fact that Chemistry is not an very employable major and my only option would probably be academia.
