Pre-Med - Yale, Hopkins, Cornell, UChicago or Columbia?

I'm shocked that I even have to make this choice. I was set to go to Hopkins until the Ivy decisions came out. Yale is giving even better fin aid than Hopkins (although I could afford both packages) and Cornell gave me the opportunity to be a research scholar which would mean very good research opportunities and Columbia made me a 'Kluge Scholar' although I still don't know what that is. Alas, my heart still lies with Hopkins but I still feel torn...

What do you guys think I should do? Better yet, what would you guys do?

You need more information on what a Kluge Scholarship is; if it's awesome, go to Columbia. =)

haha. I was more thinking along the lines of Cornell, Yale or JHU since I haven't received Columbia's fin aid package yet.

Basically, you need a set of complete information -- finaid packages, details on these programs, etc.

You have all great choices! Congrats! Based off of those selections, I'd personally say that Hopkins might be at the bottom of my list. No disrespect, it's a great school, but when put against going to equally great schools in Chicago, NYC, or the beautifulness that is Yale's campus... I think it'd be hard to give all those up for Baltimore. Kluge Scholarship is a merit based scholarship for underrepresented students in higher education. As for the research scholar program, I wouldn't worry too much about that. You'll find great research opportunities at any of those schools, regardless of any organized program.

Hm.

go to columbia....but i'm biased :P

anyway...BDM should know better than to link to another forum as a source of good info

here is some more info about the scholarship:

The Scholars Program
The Scholars Program
Columbia News ::: John Kluge, CC'37, Pledges $400 Million for Financial Aid

your cost of attendance at columbia will be as much if not much less than at any other institution given the fact that you got this scholarship and that columbia's policies are similar to yale's

Oh ok. Thanks for the info so far guys! Feel free to keep posting :)

Wait until Columbia's finaid package is back. If Shraf is right that it's considerably less than Yale's, then Columbia's probably the best choice.

I am assuming you are a HS senior with admissions to Undergrad programs at the schools you mention above. If yes, I think Yale and Columbia are better for Premed than JHU (sorry JHU guys!)

I have 3 friends with kids who are either PreMeds at JHU now or graduated from JHU Premed and gave up on Medicine track. They all inform me that JHU is a very tough school as a premed. I hear their Advisory Committee tends to discourage many Seniors from applying right out of Undergrad. I am told, most of the kids are asked to take a 'slide year'............perhaps to enhance their chances of acceptance but it also impacts the % JHU Premed reports as 'accepted' to med schools.

Perhaps some others on this board who are familiar with statistics of applicants and acceptances from JHU could comment if this opinion bears out statistically.

NOt so luck with my acceptances but need to make a choice with these as a final sot for pre-med
As in international student I was arned about JHU’s policy toward seniors opting to apply for medicine
Cornell doesnt have a medical center on site so will it hamper my chances to do any work during term
Duke was third on the list
Would really appreciat any advise

Im waitlisted at Brown and U PEnn

Duke (ten characters)

Thanks eadad, could you outline the reasons you recommend DUke over Cornell please

Very good pre med advising, much nicer climate year round, especially in the winter, and not as isolated as Cornell. Both are on a par academically, its the “soft” factors that push me to recommend Duke.

RDU (airport) offers more flight options including internationally, The Research Triangle (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill) is annually rated as one of the “smartest” places to live…very high concentration of college grads and those with advanced degrees. Eight miles away, Chapel Hill has a higher concentration of Ph.Ds living there than anywhere else in the country.

My son graduated from UNC so it is difficult for me to recommend Duke for anything…heavy dose of sarcasm… :)…just a rivalry thing, so don’t take that seriously, but in all honesty I think Duke is the better choice here.
