I'm shocked that I even have to make this choice. I was set to go to Hopkins until the Ivy decisions came out. Yale is giving even better fin aid than Hopkins (although I could afford both packages) and Cornell gave me the opportunity to be a research scholar which would mean very good research opportunities and Columbia made me a 'Kluge Scholar' although I still don't know what that is. Alas, my heart still lies with Hopkins but I still feel torn...

What do you guys think I should do? Better yet, what would you guys do?

Well, I know personally if you really love hopkins as you say, and are set on Pre-med. It has one of the best pre-med programs in the country. I’d say just sit down for a few hours, think, and then go with where you feel “in the pit of your stomach” is right for you.

Hopkins. I love Yale, I would say Yale for anything else. But I would say definitely Hopkins for premed. My brother who went to Yale would even say JHU for premed, yale for everything else.

I would think it depends on what you wish to study while in undergrad – pure sciences and majoring in a science or a wider spectrum of classes. For the former I would say Yale or JH, the latter all Yale.

JHU is good for med school, and so is Yale, but we’re talking undergrad here. In that case, Yale I think might be a better choice. The Cornell research scholar choice sounds compelling as well.

Perhaps someone can post the premed acceptance rates (don’t know where to find them) in order to help the op. Last I read, Yale has higher med school acceptance rates than Hopkins.

I can’t find the info consolidated anywhere. Searching through CC forums and Google, Yale seems to be like 95/96 and Hopkins seems to be about 93. Some were criticizing the Hopkins ranking, however, because it doesn’t count those who drop out of med track and apparently there are a sizeable amount there?!?! Not sure.

I’m beginning to lean towards Yale now. Just took another virtual tour and wow. I mean really, wow.

Does anyone know if the pre-med acceptance rates are for those applying straight out of Yale (ie. no gap year) or if they turn anyone away for application to med school?

As I’ve said before, a family friend who is a doctor with an international reputation and at Harvard Medical School said that their experience was that students from JHU were better prepared than from any other school including Harvard.

They’re all going to be excellent premed schools. Frankly you should be looking at other things to make your decision. Go to the school that you think you would be happiest at regardless of how good it’s pre-med program is. If we were talking about some crappy state school versus JHU, then it would be different… but both Yale and JHU prepare their students well and both have astonishingly high acceptance rates of their students to medical school. Besides, there are VERY FEW things that you learn in premed that you need to know for medical school… so who cares if JHU has a slightly better premed curriculum?

Yale on average has 94-96% of its first-time applicant students admitted to medical schools…I’d say JHU is a little bit less of a favorable choice because you’ll probably find a hellota more people that are more cutthroat and depressed about the premed path

Premeds at Yale are competitive, but then again who isn’t…especially since that’s what got you in in the first place…but I find them all to be extremely friendly and helpful on hw/tests etc, and because Yale also has such good funding in other aspects in education, there’s usually a bit less of a “competing for the resources” feeling, not to mention if you ever wanto experience things beyond science Yale has it all…I’m a freshman and I’m already working in a lab at the med school this semester, getting name published in the paper etc…I’m sure JHU has it too, but you might find it a bit tougher to get there
