I am a junior at big state school and I got two C’s in intro bio and i can’t retake it. I worked super hard but I just don’t know what happened. Does this tank my chances to get into any med school?
Well, you’re not exactly helping your chances for admission.
Did you get the Cs as a junior or freshman? (Makes a difference because adcomms can forgive a rough transition to college, but are less understanding of junior who does poorly in a intro level classes in core discipline that future physicians study.)
What’s your sGPA? (GPA in just bio, chem, physics, math classes)
You need to take several upper level, challenging bio classes–and earn As-- to demonstrate to adcomms your Cs in intro bio are flukes if you hope to have a chance at med school.
as a freshman i have transcripts from two school so my overall gpa is 3.5
If you have a very strong demonstrated upward grade trend, and have a strong showing (all As) in upper level bio classes, the Cs in bio won’t prevent you from getting into med school.
Your overall GPA is on the low side for MD programs. Are you open to applying to osteopathic schools?
Your GPA is more in line with successful DO applicants
I will apply to both but my goal is MD
IMO the challenge for you is as a junior is I’m guessing you’ve already completed 5 semesters and your overall GPA is 3.5 which indicates that you’ve had more than two Cs. With potentially only current semester and two senior year semesters left before you might apply, even with straight As it might be very difficult (not necessarily impossible as it would depend on grades/total number of units you complete by end of next year) for you to pull your overall GPA up to a competitive level for MD school. It also assumes your sGPA and MCAT are competitive, your ECs are solid, you write a strong PS and get strong LoRs, do well on interviews, and apply broadly, but this will be true no matter MD/DO.
Don’t rule out DO option, they still call you doctor. Don’t ease up on the gas pedal now, keep pushing in your classes, do well on MCAT and maybe by end of first semester senior year, you can more accurately assess MD v DO chances. Good luck.
