pre-med

I am basically looking at two different types of schools.. the bigger university (i.e. UofM, MSU, Duke) or the smaller Liberal Arts College (i.e. Albion). I was wondering which type was better for getting into medical school. I heard LACs have better acceptance rates into med school?

anyone have an opinion on this?

As a general rule, private schools do better than publics, although it's hard to tell given student quality is usually different. Otherwise, most differences are pretty small.

Extremely old post, but the topic is still of interest to me.. At Albion, an LAC in Michigan with around 2,000 overall undergrads, I was told they had a 93% medical school acceptance rate. At the university of Michigan, I was told it was somewhere around 60% which was very good. Why should I go to UofM when theres a lot better chance of acceptance at an LAC like Albion? Am i missing something?

As we have said many times before, getting into medical school is a largely individual effort. Thus, not surprisingly, medical school acceptance rates tend to correlate strongly with the strength of the student body. First of all, don't trust acceptance rates that you hear about. Everyone and their grandmother throws out numbers. Ask for the acceptance rate in writing along with other statistics. In an optimal situation, it would be as detailed as this:

U-M :: The Career Center :: For Students :: Med School Application

Always be suspicious when the acceptance rate does not fit with the strength of the student body (for example, if a school with an average SAT score of 1800 boasts a 90% acceptance rate). Ask if there is a screening process that's preventing subpar applicants from applying and ask how many actual applicants the school generates a year. For example, Swarthmore, a great LAC, boasts an 100% acceptance rate to med school...but only produced 6 senior applicants last year.

I personally don't believe there is such a thing as a "great premed school." Any school with a hospital nearby, research going on, and teaches bio, physics, gen chem, and orgo is adequate for premed.

jdid9, the personal attention you receive at Albion would be the big difference between UM, MSU, etc. My S, a freshman at Albion, is really enjoying the one on one relationships with faculty (he is in Ford and Gerstacker). Are you going to be a DASP presenter? The payoff is pretty sweet!
