Pre read interpretation?

Ok so admissions told the coach that I was a competitive applicant but there was concern about a D in graphic design quarter grades my junior year. He said overall it was a pretty good early read and he should know more over the next 2-3 weeks. At least my grades for this mid-year report are pretty good as I have a 4.0 weighted GPA. The mid-year report has not yet been taken into account. Hoping someone can decipher this language and let me know if I should be optimistic and let me know the language that was used with you and if you were accepted based on that language in the pre read.

I’m not sure what language was used by admissions to give the “green light” not sure if I got it

For my daughter, we were literally told “We got the green light from admissions to continue the recruiting process.”

TBH, the “D” on the transcript seems like a red flag to me.

Pretty hard to say, it’s really a coach question he is the only one who knows. Even if someone else tells you, unless it is the same coach at the same school it doesn’t mean much. It doesn’t sound like you are completely safe though. Might be a good idea to have a plan in place of who to call if this falls through in a couple weeks. If this works out, then you wasted a few hours. If not, you are more ready. And if you are a senior it probably is crunch time, so you don’t want to waste time.

The language that you report is not what we were given in positive pre-reads. Words like “enthusiastic,” “looks very good,” “encouraging” – each time the general import of the communication was that the GPA and stats were positively viewed by admissions, together with a comment that it was not a guarantee of admission. Comments about “concerns” were not relayed. The results for the pre-read were the results – we were never told that we would learn more later. In other words, as I interpret it, you did not get a clean pre-read. What that means, however, is unclear.

The coach told you that he or she would have more information in 2-3 weeks. You will know more then.

It doesn’t hurt to work on a backup plan.

@gointhruaphase will work on that and hopefully their concern is gone after the mid year report.

In my daughter’s case (track) the pre-reads seem to be used to determine if you met minimum standards for admission (Ivy league), if you could “get in on your own” and this preserve an admission slot for the team (ACC, CAA), or if you would be eligible for merit based awards if the school offers them, preserving athletic $$ for other athletes (Patriot League). From your post. it isn’t clear what type of school you are applying to but I would agree with others that our positive pre-reads left no question of admissibility.

Yeah I agree there is some cloudiness to my pre-read and the school I am applying to is Grinnell @jmk518
