@MTquest24 - Not a super pro at this, so someone correct me if I am wrong, but walk-ins do NOT require you to have applied for the school. That I know for sure. I THINK you cannot do a walk-in for any school that you submitted a pre-screen and did not pass.
Yes, you can do a walk-in without applying to the school and anyone can do a walk-in (even if you did not pass the pre-screen).
@MTquest24 At least in past unifieds, only certain schools will have walk ins available and they will usually have something posted outside the room saying they have some available. Whenever my kids had a few hours in between auditions they wud walk around and see who had spots available. They had a sign up table out front. I think they found it very beneficial as they learned more about some fantastic programs. One of my kids received an offer on the spot right after the audition. As for schools where you did not pass a prescreen? I Can’t say for certain but I do not think those would be possible as a walk in as they have already seen a video audition. After that long winded response I would sum it up by saying if you have the extra time and interest in walk ins, I recommend it
I am so curious if you can do a walk-in on a prescreen not passed. There was one we couldn’t understand and it was at a school she has friends at and hoped to go. it would be so nice to have the opportunity for one more shot on a walk-in, but I have no clue if you can.
You absolutely can do a walk-in for a school that you did not pass the pre-screen for. My D worked with a coach who has done this for years and he has had numerous students over the years have successful walk-in auditions at schools that rejected them during pre-screens!
Wow! Very good to know. Thanks for the info @PNWdrama !
My D just got an invitation for an online interview with Boco. Does anyone have experience with this from last year?
This gets asked a lot. @HAHCx4 I would check with the schools that they are okay with seeing people that didn’t pass the prescreen.
We were told by coaches that in past they have pulled up the kids app on the laptop and asked “did you not pass the prescreen?” and it was embarrassing for the kid.
Not saying not worth a shot but this is what our coaches advised parents. They gently suggested it’s a better use of time trying to get audition for schools that haven’t rejected your child already.
Also, the combines are a better way to be seen by schools that may have not passed your child initially --because with a room holding multiple schools they understand that some may have not passed some of the kids. Hope this makes sense.
@mamaboyz Thanks. That is what i had been told in previous years and it would definitely be an awkward situation. Also something to consider… at past unifieds I haven’t ever seen what people would consider the top “reach” schools having walk ins available.
She doesn’t want to do a walk in there, she feels it’s important to respect the initial decision. Tough kid, I was just curious !!
How long did it take to hear back from Ithaca? It’s been just over two weeks now
Seems like pre screen responses have slowed we’re still waiting on 8 that went in a Few days after the rest.,schedule is getting super tight sure would like to hear from the rest . Hopefully soon
New to this forum and to the process. My D has applied to 20 audition schools, 13 of which have prescreens. Despite her best efforts, due to other obligations, she got her first pre-screens submitted 10/27, a few more 10/31, and then a few 11/5 and a couple today and still has two more. Reading all of your posts makes my heart sink that all of this work has been for nothing because she has been a month late to the party. She got pretty immediate “no”s from Pace and Point Park and a redirect to Acting from Emerson so she has not had a single “pass” yet and is totally freaking out. Her BOCO stuff was all in 10/27 and it sounds like others who submitted around then heard back from BOCO five days ago so that does not bode well. She has also been waiting since 10/27 to hear from Shenandoah and it sounds as if others have heard from them within two weeks which is right about now for her. Any advice on how to support her but also how to prepare her for possibility of not passing any prescreens?
@Universitygirl44. I heard from Ithaca in about 2 weeks -
@AnxiousNovice my friend’s daughter just heard back from BOCO on Saturday night
My D submitted BOCO in mid-Sept. and still has not heard.
@AnxiousNovice Try not to worry about other poster’s results, timing, etc. It’s impossible to know what it all means until you get your kid’s results. I’m also a novice. I see the randomness of the whole process (oximoron, I know). Also don’t get too caught up in tiers. At this level, they’re all talented.
Although this is our first rodeo, D attends a Performing Arts HS and has several friends go through the process for the past few years. Always different when it’s your kid, but we’ve seen a lot of wild results. We’ve seen some really talented kids (for my eyes and ears) not get in to some great schools and some others with different talent get in to the “top tier”. I really do think it comes down to what they are looking for. Last yr we had a lead in a best in class at state show, who can sing your face off (like crazy good) get passed over at all the biggies. Her mom said, “She’s great but she’s a dime a dozen.”
Around here it’s a daily rollercoaster. “No” “No” “Yes”. I prefer the day ending with a “Yes”.
And for you financially minded folks, kind of weird to get a bunch of academic acceptances, several with meaty scholarships, ahead of Prescreen or audition results. Kind of makes you route for certain schools when it’s more than enough to just hope she passes prescreens. Makes me a little queezy about NYU because we know they won’t provide a dime.
@rickle1 - I love this and totally agree!!
@AnxiousNovice - being on here is a blessing and a curse. The support is amazing, but it definitely gets in your head reading all the other timelines, results, application numbers, etc…my S got his first prescreen no yesterday and his coach told me you can’t focus on those, focus on the ones who want him because it is rarely about the talent, it is about who they are looking to cast for the next 4 years. Most kids don’t make half their prescreens so nos are going to happen…celebrate the passes and even the redirects!! My words of support are regardless of the number of prescreens passed, there are the non-prescreen schools where you already have auditions and those are where you can shine live and in person!!
We will all get through this!!
^ excellent points. To give you an example of the result parade, D has recieved 7 prescreens, 3 yes, 3 no, and 1 redirect. She’s bummed about the "no"s. But in all honesty, she thinks her prescreen was just so so and nowhere near indicative of her actual talent. I tend to agree with her. But she needed to get it done and submitted as we were worried about deadlines, slots, etc. Still has to finish a dance routine for two more.
Fortunately she has several direct auditions lined up. So if she can shine in those, she’ll be in good shape. She auditioned this past weekend and was told she was spectacular and would be discussed witht he Dean of the Enterntainment program and Director of the specific department. Then she got home and got two "no"s on prescreens…rollercoaster.
Just focus on the positive.
@rickle1 “sing your face off” LOL so completely agree with the randomness of the whole process I agree it’s all about fit and what look they have in mind more than talent. Which, is really how it is in the professional world too, so might as well get used to it… Also agree about the financial end - you start rooting for the one that’s thrown a bunch of money due to academic/merit. I guess it’s because it’s 2 separate departments - admissions and then the program itself. But, it’s also what makes all the schools “lottery schools” they’re on everyone’s lists because they’re financially affordable for everyone.
@theatrekidmom totally agree about having a mix of prescreens and non-prescreen schools!
Hoping everyone ends their day on a “yes” today!
