prelims are just regular exams. not every class calls them prelims, some say midterms or exams, but you will find “prelim” is just a really common term. some classes might have another type of examination (like a lab practical, or in-class quizzes.) if they are not listed there they might have exams during class time instead of during the evening, or that list might not be entirely complete.

Question on prelims. If student knows now that she will have to miss two days in late September when it looks like she will have 1 or 2 prelims, will professors allow her to take them a few days early or late? D has a wedding she will be in and will have to be gone Thu-Sun at the end of September. Should she email the professors now?

she should definitely err on the side of caution and plan on NOT being able to attend the wedding…

each professor has a different policy on missing prelims or having them rescheduled. sometimes they will administer an early prelim. many professors are not flexible.

i would definitely have her find out when her prelims are and when she has to miss.

If it’s on that page, it’s usually in-class exam or you don’t have it at all.

@TKsmom: campuscsi has made the point. Email-ing the professors would certainly be helpful. You can ask whether they have scheduled prelims on the dates that she would miss and whether they can accommodate her by giving the exams before she leaves.
