PreMed at Fordham?

Does anyone know about Fordham’s PreMed/Bio/Chem programs? I think I have a very good chance of getting in but I’m not sure if its the best choice for my major.

Fordham’s pre-med track is definitely a great program. But, they make the freshmen year curriculum extremely intense. Not a single pre-med at Fordham can say they enjoyed their freshmen year course load. For the most part, you would take General Chemistry 1 and 2 Lecture, Lab, and Recitation, Introductory Biology 1 and 2 Lecture and Lab, a math class, and then two core classes. For most students, it is simply unbearable. Screw unbearable. It is a literal hell. However, this is, of course, part of the weed out process. The beginning of freshmen year usually starts out with around (I think) roughly 300 students. By the end of freshmen year, you have 200 students. Of those 200 students, many spend their sophomore year playing catch up by retaking dropped or failed courses from freshmen year. So all in all, you have like 100-150 students actually “on track”. The worst part about freshmen year it is that it lowers a majority of the pre-med students’ GPAs. When you make it past freshmen year and are on track, you’re in the clear. It’s still difficult, but compared to freshmen year, your following semesters will not compare in difficulty at all. I’m a senior at Fordham now and will be graduating in May. All in all, the pre-med program definitely prepared me well for the MCAT. I will say, I am excited to graduate though. Being pre-med can be compared to being part of a cult. Especially after your freshmen year. By this point, if you’re on track and taking the courses in the order as they’re suggested by Fordham, you’ll be taking Organic Chemistry sophomore year and Physics junior year. So, in other words, you begin to see the same faces over and over again. It’s not really an issue, but a lot of students can be judgemental in the program. I think the competitive nature of medical school admissions is to blame for this though.

@Sammysaw82925, Great info! I have a question for you: My son wants bioengineering with intent to go to med school. He liked Fordham enough to apply, but he put his app into the Gabelli cuz no Engineering at Fordham. He is accepted at Northeastern for Bioengineering with some merit money, and awaiting UPenn, Brown, Tufts. Lo and behold, Fordham offers him Cunniffe Presidential Scholarship covering Tuition, Room, Board and Stipend for 4 years. Honors Program. One thought is he does Gabelli/Pre-Med. Go undergrad for free, we’ll pick up med school. Do you know anybody that did Gabelli and Pre Med successfully? Have any thoughts?

It’ll be nearly impossible to do it, since GSB has a set order of classes to take. He can try talking to pre-med department to work something out, but the balance between the business school and pre-med will be brutal.

It would be tough. Look at the coursework need to: 1) complete Fordham’s core curriculum 2) complete the b-school core curriculum 3) complete the pre-med requirements and 4) complete the requirements in his major and see if it is possible to get it done in 4 years. This information should be online.

In addition your S can contact the pre-health advising group at Fordham to discuss.

Just got admitted to Fordham. What is the best major for pre-med at Fordham in your opinion to maintain GPA for med school apps and also have a better jnob prospect in case one decides not to go to med-school. Thanks.

There is no one best major for every pre-med. Choose a major that interests YOU and that you feel YOU can do very well in.
