PreMed English Requirement

Does anyone know if, as a PreMed student, you need to take English 124 AND English 125? The First Year Writing Requirement (from my understanding) only stipulates that you take one course, however, most medical schools require "one year" of English. In registering for freshman courses, I would really appreciate a response.

You just have to take one year of English, which means 2 semesters of English courses, not necessarily 124 or 125.

Ignore the woman, she knows nothing =P.

The writing requirement involves a First Year Writing Requirement, and an Upper Level Writing Requirement.

First Year Writing Requirement is one class, usually either English 124 or English 125 for general LSA students, though any class listed here (<a href="http://www.lsa.umich.edu/cg/cg_results.aspx?termArray=f_07_1660&cgtype=ug&allsections=true&show=20&reqs=IC%5B/url%5D">http://www.lsa.umich.edu/cg/cg_results.aspx?termArray=f_07_1660&cgtype=ug&allsections=true&show=20&reqs=IC</a>) will also meet the requirement. Honors students are expected to do Great Books or Classic Civ to satisfy that requirement. The difference between English 124 and 125 is that one is creative writing, and one is argumentative writing.

Upper Level Writing Requirement is supposed to be a class in your intended concentration (though it doesn't have to be) with an emphasis on writing, teaching you the conventions of writing for your intended field.

OK, I didn't realize that so many courses can satisfy the requirement.

That being said...If I am planning on applying to medical school, will I need two semesters worth of English or just one

I plan on enrolling in English 124 this coming semester, but I need to know if I should plan on enrolling in English 125 as well

I don't think med schools wouldn't care if you have 0 semesters of English.

EDIT: ok, nevermind, apparently they do care for some reason...it doesn't have to necessarily be english, just something involving writing. Odds are you're going to be doing this anyways because of distribution requirements.

You don't need to take both 124 and 125 and no one ever does.

Christine123...Do you mean I don't need to take both for my FYWR or do you mean that I don't need to take both for medical school?

Thank you for your comments thus far.

You only need one class for FYWR. What she's saying is that even if people choose to take multiple english classes, they pretty much never do both 124 and 125.

Alright, I figured that. But I'm more concerned in terms of medical school requirements. I'm trying to make a course schedule for next year that won't kill me, but at the same time keep me on track for med school.

I need to somehow fit in...

Math 115
Bio 171 w/ Lab
Chem 130 w/ Lab
English 124
Spanish 231

This is probably too much for a "transitional semester" so I'm going to need to re-evaluate my plan.

I think that's fine. It looks like you're getting a lot of requirements out of the way.
