Premed in Davidson

Hi,

I'm an international accepted to Davidson college with scholarship. I want to study medicine in the future and at the moment I am wondering if premed in Davidson would make me a competetive student in the future.

If there are any current students here who would like to share their experience or knowledge about Davidson's premed program I would be more than grateful. Also, what are the cons&pros of being a Davidson student? I am an active student who values student life, but I'm afraid that premed might steal away my time and motivation/enthusiasm to be a part of this community.

Thanks is advance!

Davidson's premed program has a VERY strong reputation. Also, you're going to be taking the same number of courses as everyone else so I wouldn't worry too much about having less time.

Thanks oranglight. I've been hearing that there is a grade deflation and getting a good gpa is extremely difficult. Do you think it will be a cut-throat academic life there?

It seems that I will be choosing between Brandeis and Davidson. I have Macalester and Baylor as well but Brandeis seems to be more appealing at the moment. How about you?

davidson's difficulty will be taken into account.. also, the premed program, if you are eligible, has an extremely high success rate.

Hi, Dash!
I am currently a student at Davidson and I feel like I can weigh in here. I entered Davidson with all intentions of being premed. I met with the premed advisor (he is extremely helpful and has a great reputation for getting students into med school, by the way) and set out a plan for my college career. It was going to be intense, but manageable if it was what I really wanted. Fortunately, I realized pretty early on that medicine is not the field for me. This was not necessarily because of anything that happened to me at Davidson, so don't think that was the case.

Being premed anywhere is tough. You need to have a good gpa and a good mcat score. My advice to you is to choose where you think you would fit best. Have you overnighted? You can request to overnight with a premed student here if you have the chance.

My other advice to you is to begin taking your lab sciences and all the req's asap. If you don't do this, you will get behind without even realizing it. You have to be on top of it in order to be able to study abroad during your college years.

Best of luck to you in your decision! I absolutely love Davidson! It can be a bit intense at times, but if you don't let that get to you then you will have a marvelous time here!

Take care,
Cat08

I am a beginning pre-med here...I really enjoy Davidson and even though I am currently in 2 labs I still have time to be really active in campus life and have a pretty normal social experience. Davidson is tough and can be overwhelming at times but I think that is is managable if you stay on top of things!
