Hello I will be attending Penn next year ('18). I was just wondering if any upperclassmen pre med majors can give me suggestions on what classes I should take first semester/ a breakdown of how they divided their premed requirements? I'm a biochem major and am probably going to be taking 4 classes first semester.

I would use their page as a guideline: <a href=“Biochemistry | Penn Arts & Sciences”>Biochemistry | Penn Arts & Sciences;

You could follow what they do and then add an intro Bio course sometime in freshman/sophomore years. From the looks of their requirements it seems like your choices are pretty flexible as long as Chem 101/102 is completed by the end of sophomore year.

^ This is actually so helpful, thank you!

I would do chem, physics, and math. Honors chemistry would be a good option if you are interested, it is a much smaller class and while it is more difficult, the quality of instruction is much higher than in Chem 101/102

Poeme would honors chemistry be Chem115/Chem116?

Yes chem 115. I don’t know who is teaching it though, but I hear it’s a great course. More difficult than Chem 101 but great for majors.

Don’t forget to check Penn Course Review before taking the courses. Also, shop around. If you do not like the professor, drop the course and pick another one.

I found Penn pre-med classes incredibly difficult and being graded on a curve does not help one bit. It’s important to start off on the right foot. Only take one pre-med requirement, preferably the one you are strongest in, your first semester to test the waters. I would do Writing Seminar and some freshman seminar science courses/ core requirements for the other three classes.

If you are not in MLS, perhaps you should do chem and math first semester. If you are going to major in biochem you shouldn’t get used to doing one premed class a semester or you will never finish the major.
