Premed??

ok hi all I am a senior in high school from the Dallas area and wanting to pursue pre-med. The three colleges I am considering are SMU, UTD and UofH, which all have their pros and cons. I got into SMU as a presidents scholar so money is not an issue because they cover everything, but I am concerned that the premed program at SMU is not that great. UTD is giving me, as a national merit finalist a full ride and $4000 stipend per semester, but is really close to home and may not give me the full college experience. But has a more established premed program. I got into UofH into the 7 year medical program. But the program seems very intense and I don’t have a full ride. It is tied in with 2 med schools McGovern and UTMB and you don’t know which one you will go to. Also you still have to take the MCAT and score well and maintain a high GPA. They have a really high dropout rate.

Any advice?? Much appreciated.

I would personally go to UofH because a 7 year program with guaranteed med school admissions is very hard to get into. Med schools across the states are fairly similar and taking the MCAT/having challenging scores will be required of you anyways. High dropout rates are unfortunately a defining part of pre-med. As long as you feel like you can be comfortable at that school for the next few years, I would definitely go there. Otherwise, UTD is the best choice. I personally don’t believe distance is very important to getting a “college feeling”. You make your college experience what you want. If your goal in college is to get away from home, then maybe work that out with your parents and establish periodic times to visit each other. Not to mention having family close by can often be a source of comfort.

Good luck on your decision and congrats on your admissions!
