SMU vs UTD

I got virtually full ride (scholarship + financial aids) to both schools SMU and UTD. I'm doing Biology and Premed. Where should I go, which one has a better premed program with higher acceptance rate? Thank you

Hey there,

If you’ve got a full ride to SMU, I would consider going there even before putting anything down about pre-med or your course of study. SMU has a much larger breadth of programs to choose from and should you end up deciding medicine isn’t your path, you’ll be much more likely to find something there than at UTD.

SMU’s pre-med program is outstanding, and I think one of the most underrated. It churns out a 70% medical school acceptance rate, which is 20% above the national average for colleges, and has an exceptional advising program, loads of opportunities in research labs, and an incredible ‘behind the scenes’ link to UT-Southwestern. It’s also located much closer to Dallas than UTD is, so you’ve got less of a trek to say Parkland Hospital or UTSW in terms of doing volunteering/shadowing. SMU also has a 12:1 student:faculty ratio, and with the Second Century campaign going on there, if you’re applying for the class of 2015, you’d be part of the 100th graduating class there - and I’m sure there are perks to come along with that. It’s an era of big change on the Hilltop.

UTD has great acceptance rates as well, and they do have on campus, discounted MCAT review courses with both Kaplan and Princeton Review (SMU just started a similar program with Kaplan). But you’ll note their stats are a bit lower than what SMU claims, and also they have a lower breadth of programs and courses than SMU does. If you’re looking for ‘bang for your buck’ and SMU has offered full ride, I would really consider that. If you don’t like it, you can always work out a transfer - and assuming you’re a smart kid, you shouldn’t have issues getting scholarship money.

Now that being said, I am an SMU student… But I killed my MCAT, enough to be teaching for Princeton Review now, I’m involved in a research lab and pre-med organizations on campus, and I’m loving my time here. So I’m a tad biased. Take a look at each school’s pre-med page for a better idea.

UTD: [HPAC - Successes](http://www.utdallas.edu/pre-health/prospective/successes.htm)
SMU: [Pre-health Professions Program](http://smu.edu/premed/Default.asp)

For UTD, you might want to look into [Green Fellowships](http://www.utsouthwestern.edu/utsw/cda/dept21010/files/235773.html)

To be honest, SMU has the best networking and internship programs. The pre-med track at SMU is definitely on the rise and with the professors and their connections, you will be almost guaranteed a top job at a top place. We have some who have graduated and gone to Johns Hopkins too.

Parkland Hospital, Southwestern, and Baylor Medical Center are just a few places in Dallas where students go to intern or to go to grad school (Southwestern).

Hope that helps!

Hi Lwcook5 & Nick, I am gonna join SMU in this fall. If I plan to apply for medical school in the future, I need to enroll at Biology or premed? Thanks
