Premeds or bio majors

I have a 4 in biology, but I planned on taking bio I as I’m going to be a premed and thought that it would be wise to retake it. Looking at the course catalog, however, I saw that BI 20 is only offered in the spring. Is it wise to not take BI 20 and take the other bio courses like BI 32 and BI 47. Which bio courses do I need to take in order to satisfy the medical school requirements of one year of bio. Can I take any bio course or does it have to be specfic ones? thanks for the help.

I wouldn't recommend you take 47 as a frosh. 32 is taught by dean T and is only for freshman and sophmores, so that could be alright...Usually I think people begin with some bio 19 courses in addition to 20. I started with 50 and 80 and that was a good combo, but I had the ap credit. I guess it depends on how strong of a bio student you think you really are. You don't necessarily have to take any bio in the fall, I took chem and calc.

If you want to be a serious competitor for med school and such, I think you need more than 2 bio courses. Definitely take 47, 80, and 50 would probably be good too.

The pre-med bio classes need to have a lab, i think. Just check the course description to see if it has a lab.

I think im starting with 19.5 and BN1 first semester, then CH33 and BI39 or BI48 or maybe BI 50...so many damn choices.

I really like Jackson. He is a little dry, but the nicest guy ever, and will teach you loads. (for 19.5)

I was thinking about starting with 19 but the premed page says to take two semester of bio courses that are level 20 and up. And since I'm probably doing bio mostly only for premed it doesn't make sense to take 19. I'll probably end up taking 32/53 in the fall and maybe 51/80 in the spring.........It's just confusing..So many options that fascinate me.

i wouldn't not take bio 19 just because it doesn't count for pre-med. just because you're not interested in concentrating in biology doesn't mean a lot of biology classes aren't interesting and you shouldn't take them (if i'm making sense).

i guess what i'm trying to say is, if you find a section of 19 interesting, then take it. you have time to take the other bio classes later.

well im going to concentrate in bio without being premed...so 19.5 gives credit so it doesnt matter, and it seems like a really cool class.

GH, do you know how Jackson is as an advisor if i get him for the CAP course?

What do you mean do you know how Jackson is an advisor? I don't understand the question....I did see that it was a cap course when I was on boca.

Jackson was actually my advisor, but I was randomly assigned, and I didn't have a cap course.

What I was trying to suggest before is that you'll be much better prepared to compete on the MCAT and in medical school if you can take a few more than 2 bio courses, but thats just my opinion. What do you want to major in?

lol. I'll be taking a lot more than 2 bio courses. I'm majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular biology as of now, but it's still too early for that. Why do you not suggest taking Genetics Freshman Year in the Fall?

Because its a harder course, and you probably don't want to load up too heavy for your first semester. There aren't that many frosh in genetics.

Its not to say you cant do it, but it might be a pain in the ass.

<a href="http://bms.brown.edu/bug/FAQs.html#CourseSelections%5B/url%5D">http://bms.brown.edu/bug/FAQs.html#CourseSelections</a></p>

<a href="http://www.brown.edu/Administration/Dean_of_the_College/hco/?id=185#bio%5B/url%5D">http://www.brown.edu/Administration/Dean_of_the_College/hco/?id=185#bio</a></p>

You can always email professors or dean T with bio questions, but direct premed requirements to dean simmons.

check the criticalreview and a lot of people said that its good to have a class or two of chem before starting genetics.

man its annoying that BI19.5, BN1 and CH33 are all only fall courses. I want to take them all as soon as possible.

ghey

Well whats the problem? You can take them all next semester....

man, so that would be BI19.5, BN1, CH33 and IR40 first semester.

crazy.

not in terms of difficutlty, in terms of having 3/4 of your classes being sciences. its just strange for a hs kid used to taking english, science, social studies, etc...all the time.

hah

Thats not that crazy....nuero 1 is supposedly easy, and chem 33 isnt bad either. And I imagine that 19.5 isn't crazy...

think about it this way, you won't ever have multiple papers due at the same time. (well, I can't speak for BI19, but BN1 and CH33 certainly don't have papers)

One thing to consider is that pre-reqs in the humanities are very bendable, and while they are a bit bendable in the sciences, it's harder to get away with, and probably makes the class harder than skipping a humanities prereq would.
