i want to attend a boarding school in America that is famous for ice hocky (my all time favorite sport). Any of you guys know which school is famous for hockey?

Shattuck-St Mary.

St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire. The rector was an outstanding ice hockey player at both SPS & Bowdoin College-where he was voted team MVP. If you are lucky enough to attend St. Paul's, the nation's most elite colleges will welcome your application.

ive been searching for some kind of national high school ranking... no luck so far. Any idea where i can find it?

SPS sends several kids D1 every year. Most of the kids on the varsity team are recruited however so I would suggest getting in touch with the coach and letting him know you are interested. A nod from the hockey coach will give you a nice advantage in the admissions department. This is, if you want to play varsity. Do you play AAA?

Next year, i am transferring to a boarding school in the U.S and am trying to really get into a school with a good hockey school background

I assume you are talking men's hockey here. My best knowledge is the girls side. However, I will tell you that you are not likely to see varsity ice time until you are at least a Junior, as guys prep hockey often attracts from the same talent pool as the top junior hockey here in the US. Select a school where you would attend if you broke your legs and could never play again.

Boy's hockey
Currently Andover is ranked #1 in the prep polls
Tops in the ISL are Belmont Hill, Noble and Greenough, SPS

Others that are consistently strong are: Avon Old Farms, South Kent School, Salisbury, Berkshire has come on in the past few years.

Goalie dad is right it is tough to crack these line ups. Most don't make it till their junior year to the varsity team

Also many hockey players at the elite preps are asked to repeat a year when enrolling.

Good point ColdWind
Almost all hockey players in prep have repeated once or even twice

Absolutely correct Cold Wind with regards to the number of repeat (and multi-repeat) students. Not too many 14 or 15-year-olds who can physically match up with a 19 (or even 20)-year-old man.

Even with the girls, there is a significant (about 50/50) mix of repeat-year players (mine is not, though). With girls there isn't as big of a difference in physical size, but experience does make a difference.

Now that we've given you the reality check, my best advice is talk to your coach and see where/when you might fit into the prep hockey world. Find out about players from your area who have made the jump and see how you compare.

While the whole 'repeat year' is common, there are the exceptions. Right now, Exeter is undefeated for league games (they lost to Culver in an Invitational and tied Ambri-Piotta in the Biasca challenge cup over Christmas) AND there is a mix of PG's, seniors and uppers with a Prep. A non- repeating, just turned 15 year old. Many V coaches are anxious to develop young talent and let them play rather than relegating them to JV as a knee jerk reaction.

Avon Old Farms won the Division 1 Prep School Hockey championship in 2008, 2007, 2005, 2004, 2000, 1989 and one earlier year, for a total of 7.

It's true that at schools like Avon, it's tough to make varsity, but there are four teams altogether. The school is all-boys with a population of about 400.

In my opinion, Avon is the top hockey school. They have been consistant over the years with having a good team. Also, as baseball mom mentioned, they have 4 teams, and I think there is even a 5th team which is sort of recreational. But if you add up the number of kids on Avon's 4 or 5 hockey teams, you end up having like 30% or more of the whole school playing hockey!

Avon is the dominant prep school for boy's hockey. They reload every year (this year being the exception as they've been decimated by transfers and players leaving for juniors and USNDT), but they will be be back. Well coached by John Gardiner (Salisbury
'70).

Others consistantly good: Salisbury, Hotchkiss, Taft, Andover, Exeter, Westminster, Deerrfield, Cushing, Tabor. Look for Berkshire to build on a pretty good tradition and a great new facility. SPS has come on recently.

fif can't address the girl's game.

FWIW--baseballson does NOT play hockey, so I'm no expert! We're waiting for spring and a big growth spurt! :)
