How would you rank the following prep schools?
-Loomis Chaffee
-Kingswood Oxford
-Choate
-Taft
-Hopkins School

Depends on what criteria you’re ranking - academic stats for entering students or graduating seniors, success of sports teams or academic teams, matriculation stats, size of endowment, average financial aid award, economic or ethnic diversity, arts programs, number of boarders vs. day students, physical campus, etc.

You need to be much more specific about what YOU want and need in a school, and then ask questions about a school’s relative strengths in those specific areas.

Kingswood Oxford
Loomis Chaffee and Hopkins School (tied)
Choate
Taft

The first ranking is based on the number of letters in the school’s name, the second on how much I like their mascots. :)

Seriously, mountainhiker is right. These are all fine schools. You need to determine what is most important to you in a school and then see which school(s) fit those criteria best.

Thank You! How would you rank them regarding their academic rigor. All help appreciated :)

Do a bit of research - first, go to boardingschoolreview.com, and look at each school’s stats for “SSAT score” (which gives you info on the average score for incoming students) and also “SAT score” (which gives you info on the average score for graduating seniors).

Search through each school’s website, and see if you can find more current data that gives the same info. Almost all schools have something called a “school profile” which is a document they provide to colleges for students applying for admission. If you can find that (and it’s sometimes difficult to find) it will give you lots of really pertinent info. Look closely at the course catalog, and see if the classes look challenging enough for you.

Call the schools, and talk to someone in the Admissions office with specific questions about academic rigor - availability of honors courses or APs, depth and breadth of course offerings, possibility for independent study if you exhaust the available course offerings.

Thank you!

Another basis for assessing prep schools is: how academically rigorous are the universities in which the graduates matriculate:
