Prep Schools In The News & Media

Am I the only in who thinks today a college counselor would hate his response? Come on, man! Don’t say you want to go because your dad went there and you want the Harvard label! Show them you truly know what programs the school has to offer!

Keep in mind that until the mid 1920’s, Harvard accepted every white, Christian, male applicant who could pay. In 1935, given the US economy, it’s unlikely that they had many more applicants than seats. As a Choate grad who was a legacy and whose father was SEC Chairman and whose grandfather was a former US congressman and Mayor of Boston, he could have written his application on a paper towel and been admitted.

Hmmmm……@Skieurope….your “Keep in mind that until the mid 1920’s, Harvard accepted every applicant” is not accurate. There were quota systems in place for certain races and ethnicities.

For an interesting history on the legacy of Endicott Peabody and St Grottelsex admissions to the Ivies….check out this older article. The article references some history that is good to know in the prep school world.

Just to add that our esteemed moderator @SkiEurope did inform us of something I believe is interesting and accurate; That there was no official admissions office at Harvard before 1920.

I spoke with a an elderly gentleman (Class of 54) years ago who told me of his experience at SPS. He was with a small group of Senior classmates early in the year, when the “House” advisor and one of the dean-equivalents pointed to each one of them where they will go to college. It’s like he had ESP….or something else

Also note that JFK’s essay and grades have been posted and discussed on CC many, many, many, many times…. Even ski posted it here.

It helps to be a Kennedy as much now as then. Nothing to see here.

Heck, he could have written it on used toilet paper without decreasing his “chances”.

I originally wrote that (well, not the used part) but opted against it since somebody would have responded that I was being disrespectful.

Inspiring story about the hockey player from Milton:pray::pray::pray::pray:

New location for “Deerfield Academy” is going to be at St Mark’s? News is that there is a second location announced for “The Holdovers” filming location at St Mark’s. The film is about a group of Deerfield boys (from my generation) held over during a school holiday with the hated teacher in charge.

From what we know via sources at Deerfield, the film was supposed to be at the school’s location (about 90 minutes west of St Mark’s). The DA grapevine told us filming was to commence on campus over the spring break. Wondering if there will be scenes at both locations….or has the village historic society put the brakes on?

:racehorse: :clapper: Dispatching all investigative reporters at both schools to give us a scoop!

That’s really disappointing. St. Mark’s has a decent campus but it’s not nearly as nice as the Deerfield campus and surrounding area.

The “special correspondent” I know tells me that a current Deerfield boy is a talented actor and has a role in the movie ,

St. Mark’s is about 2 hours closer to Boston than Deerfield is. SMS is inside the 30 mile radius where crew members who are part of the Boston-area union (which will be many of them) don’t have to be paid for travel time and mileage or be provided per-diems and lodging. Days spent shooting at Deerfield will be far more expensive, so they’ll likely reserve them for doing exterior shots. And lodging cast & crew from out of town in a smaller area like Deerfield is more of a pain… DA parents can tell you that finding one hotel room over certain weekends can be a challenge, so imagine trying to find 200 of them.

Right, and for one such event, we found ourselves in an Airbnb to remember! It was a nice apartment atop a woodshop complete with all sorts of tools that gave me pause as to whether I’d see the next morning! On the plus side, it was very close to the Bridge of Flowers.

Last year:

“Fun” factoid. This is what TMZ stands for: the Thirty Mile Zone. Initially it was the one in LA of course but now more broadly applies to coverage of celebrities everywhere.

Now imagine him saying that in his best Sheldon Cooper voice.
