Preparing for Beast

If I am not mistaken, WP will issue cadets a CamelBack in CBT.

Yes, they got them last year.

If you're already in decent shape, don't worry about working out. Spend what little time you have with your friends and family. Physically, Beast is isn't that hard. I think most people who ahve gone through it would agree. It's the academic year that's tough.

My advice to people coming in this summer:

RUN. Run. Run. The hills are a killer. We have a hill that basically goes a mile. They don't make you run it during beast, but you can't go anywhere without going up.

As far as rucking is concerned, it effects all people differently. My first ruck was horrible, but then they weren't so bad. Finding your own little place is a good thing because you aren't allowed to talk so all you think about is how much your feet hurt and that your friends are all at home still sleeping.

Pushups for the girls too. A lot of people say it takes girls a good year to get the hang of pushups. Although, there are exceptions. I was surprised to see that guys didn't do situps as well, but again, thats just because we are different.

If I had time to prepare again, I would run hills and do more pushups. Also, enjoy the time you have off.

females do hella situps

I've been training for beast over the past month or two. Right now I can do about 51 push ups and 78 sit ups. I want to get to WP doing about the max on the APFT (72 pushups 78 situps). I gotta work on my push ups a lot though. Anyway gl training dont do too much or youll wear out your muscles or get injured.

On pushups: Make sure you're doing Army push-ups. Dont cheat, its just not worth it. If you arent doing them properly you can probably only do half of what you're doing right now.

max p/u for 17-20 age group is 71... sorry, sometimes i get too into details

What are all of the events in the APFT and what are the maxes?

Push-ups, Sit-ups, 2-Mile Run
Max's respectively (17-20 Male): 71, 78, 13:00

2 minutes p/u and s/u 71 and 78... 2 mile run 13:00

max changes with age

thanks for the fast and accurate reply.

any idea about the max's for girls or where I can find them?

Just google it... the world is at your finger tips

Army pushups? Thats like down to 90 degrees or less and all the way back up no?

You've got it exactly, down to 90, then up until your elbows lock. Text book pushups nothing less. At SLS the cadet grading my pushups was really hard on me. I did a little over 70 but about 30 didnt count and I ended up getting a pretty ****ty score. You have no idea how frustrating it is having pushups not count cuz your elbows werent locked.

Army pushups are easy to cheat on, just put your hands in close and crank them out. I think it's harder to do the normal textbook pushup with your arms wide and touching your nose. If you put your arms in close and look up, you can do them really fast and pretty easily. That's just my experience.

yeah- when i took the apft last, the sergeant who counted my pushups had "the scroll" and "the tab". needless to say it went like this: 1,2,2,2,2,3,3,4,5,6,7,7,7,7,7,8,8,9,10,etc. i probably did 80 but had only 60 count.

oh- and i'm pretty dang sure west point uses alice packs. aparently molle is supposed to be good, but has a flaw that literally breaks your back. oh, and worse than an alice pack is LBE's. uuugh. you will learn to hate them. and canteens. canteens just downright suck. well, maybe west point gets better stuff than we do, ours is probably vietnam surplus. when you get to war forget about the lbe's and lce's and stuff, everything just goes on your body armor. oh, and make sure you fit your k-pod right. oh, bring your own helmet strap, cuz the ones they issue you in the real army are dirty and messed up. those are my advice. i have a question:

are airborne soldiers allowed to bring their jump boots?

Whats the point in cheating no-offense. The point isnt so you can brag about your score if i'm not mistaken, its so you get in shape.

It's interesting, for push-ups, i do much better with wide arms and high speed. Hum.
