I am in the tenth grade right now. What can I do in the next 1.5 years to better my chances to be admitted to the chemical engineering department at Cooper Union?

bump bump bump

Make sure you take the most challenging courses at your high school. For instance, most students applying will have taken AP Calc BC.

Call Cooper Union’s admission office for guidance. They happen to have a very friendly and helpful admission’s staff. Best to get information like this directly from the source, plus, you will be demonstrating interest in Cooper Union. Be sure to give your name and get the name of the representative you speak to for future questions you may have.

Hi srilankar333,

The best thing you can do is make the most out of your high school career. Keep your GPA up (93+, or 3.5+)! Prepare for your SATs and aim for a 2000+ (preferably 2100+). Challenge yourself and take APs. BC Calc, Chem, and especially Physics (both mechanics and E&M)! You will need AP Physics because the Physics courses at Cooper will likely be some of the toughest courses you take.
Get involved in school and clubs. I’ve noticed that many students at Cooper were involved in at least one of these three activities: Science Bowl, Science Olympiad, Research. Research is a particularly useful activity and will help you get internships and jobs when you are in college (and will also help with grad school, REUs). For the lack of a better expression, get involved in science-y things and expand your mind. Explore your curiosities.

You should also speak with people that you know who have attended Cooper and figure out if it’s the right school for you. Many people are overwhelmed in the first semester of their freshman year and regret coming to Cooper.
