preppiest colleges

what are the preppiest colleges? by preppy i mean wealthy kids, elite, prep schoolers, polos, popped collars, etc.

Statistically, among the top 50 LACs, in 2002-2003, Trinity, followed by Davidson, Conn. College, Bates, Kenyon, and Williams. Among the top 50 major universities, again, statistically in 2002-2003, Georgetown, followed by Notre Dame, Yale, Princeton. and Tufts. The order shuffles a bit when you take lack of financial assistance into account, but the leaders remain pretty much the same (just add Washingon & Lee).

These are all terrific schools, or they wouldn't be in the top 50.

haha, definately wouldn't "fit in" at any of those schools :) i'm like the oppisate of all things prep ;)

i love all of those schools, excellent learning environments, despite the preppy persona.

yeah, i do agree with that, all excellent schools (obviously).. just not my style ;)

Bucknell...and I thought Amherst was preppy...no?

Colgate is like all white all the time

Or perhaps because of? ;) You know it's true, ilcapo... I looked for a preppy environment wherever possible, so I don't fault anyone for doing this.

Hamilton is pretty preppy too.

Mini, What statistics sre used to detemine preppiness?

What, now you have statistics on "popped collars"?

princeton is like the most preppy school ever...(i know i'm a student, but i couldn't help posting this) they have a question on their app: What is your favorite book? My answer: The Preppy Handbook, by Lisa Birnbach

hahaha GO c05!!!!!!!!!!

"Mini, What statistics sre used to detemine preppiness?"

Percentage of students from private schools. It can be combined with percentage of student who receive no need-based financial assistance to create an "entitlement" index. It can be further refined by subtracting the percentage of students receiving Pell Grants (coming from the bottom 35% of the population economically speaking.) The measures are broad - there will be individual differences in campus culture, etc., that cannot be attributed to the index. (Harvard, for example, will not fall particularly high on a preppy index, but the presence of a substantial proportion of very wealthy, well-connected students will nonetheless be noticeable. Pomona, in contrast, may have a reasonably high percentage of wealthy, private school students, but a much smaller proportion of those will come from the traditional northeast feeder schools.)

While "preppy" does mean from a "prep" school I suppose, a preppy school to me is one where a good portion of the students are involved in Greek life and sports not just academics. Financial aid would come into it, if a majority of students have Range Rovers and Hummers and vacation in Tropez, the feel is going to be different than if the school doesn't have any bigtime sports or Greeks and students study abroad or do volunteer work during vacation even if they have trust funds and went to a Waldorf school.
I also think a school that has a national draw has a different feel than a school that is regional, but the bigger the school is, it seems harder for one group to dominate.
