I've visited a couple of times, did an overnight and read a load of student reviews. Apparently the stereotype holds pretty true... if Colgate were more diverse, I would have submitted my deposit a month ago. As it stands, though, the stereotype makes me nervous - I'm not a minority, but I don't want to be drowning in a sea of homogeneity either.

Can any current students provide insight? It's much appreciated.

For starters, when I started Colgate in 2005, it was… fairly “white.” But when I graduated in 2008 and saw prospective students just beforehand, I was very, VERY impressed. Colgate really has done a LOT in just few years to make its campus more ethnically diverse.

And, as lydia08 likes to say, yes, there are guys who wear pink shorts but they are far and few.

It would appear that Colgate students don’t use this site very much- possibly due to other interests- such as upcoming finals and the Patriot League lacrosse championships.

Anyway Shwoot, what’s your decision with deposits due on 1 May?

About the question of diversity, the colgate.edu Admissions page says:

“The Class of 2014 represents Colgate’s most diverse class year yet. 26.2% of the Class of 2014 self-identified as being from multicultural backgrounds and 8.5% are international students. Colgate’s student body also includes students from 48 states, the District of Columbia, and 36 countries.”

I also see that the faculty are 21% non-white.

How does this apparent stereotype hold true?

Best of success your freshman year, wherever you matriculate!

There are a lot of preppy white kids at Colgate. When I matriculated in 2005, I was in for a total culture shock. You will see a lot of ralph lauren and lacoste golf-type wear, and to suggest otherwise would be grossly misleading. However, you should know two things about 'gate. First, that despite the preppy stereotype, many of these people have a wide variety of interests and can be academically engaging. Of course, with every university, you will have the kids who seem to think a good college education = drinking yourself stupid on a regular basis. However, you will also find a lot of kids who like to go out and have fun who are not your typical frat-kids. Which brings me to my second point: there are a lot of different people on campus. We have a healthy contingent of International students (europeans, south asians, you name it). In addition, it will not be hard for you to find non-preppy american kids either (whether you feel at home with the sporty D1 athletes, science-geeks, or debate-nuts is up to you).
