Okay so, I decided to interject my thoughts.

Around here, “preppy” kids are the kids who shop at Hollister, AE, Buckle, etc. They almost look like they popped out of a poster on one of those stores’ walls. They are, stereotypically, snooty, in to sports, and judgmental. I have met “preppy” kids like that, but I’ve also met quite a few that aren’t judgmental or snooty by any means. They just prefer those types of clothing.

Hippies around here are still what you would think of from the 60s and 70s. Dreadlocks, tie dyed shirts, baggy pants, weed, jam bands, etc. They’re the most laid back people I know, but they aren’t safe from being judgmental. Many of them look down on conservatives, but there are those that have a “we’ll agree to disagree” outlook and not care. They are some of the most intelligent people I know, and also some of the most ignorant. It just depends.

Hipsters… well, around here we call them “scene.”

If I had to pick one for myself, it would be a cross of hippie and hipster. I don’t dress in peasant blouses and torn up jeans or smoke weed, but I am very liberal. I prefer to dress more fashionable.

I don’t like stereotyping people, though. Labels are lame.

I see both preps and hippies as being liberal. I also don’t see preps judging others much of what they wear etc… yeah hippies brings back thoughts of 60-70’s, and more rare I guess.

Preps in my area are almost always Conservative, but that may be because I live in NC. The “hippies” I know, which could include myself, are different from the ones prevalent in the '60s and '70s, but hold the same ideals.

They shower and are less into “free love”, but they are liberal and open-minded. A lot of them do smoke pot (I don’t) and listen to the Grateful Dead, but so do a lot of “preps.”

The preps I know wear RL, Hollister, A & F, Lacoste, CK, AE, and other brand names. I know plenty of preps who are horrible people, but I know many who are friendly. It really depends on the person; not on the specific, generalizing label.

I will say that most preps I know don’t like people who aren’t attractive, which could mean body/face or style. Again, it completely depends on the person.
I was just hoping to dispel some of the stereotypes regarding “hippies.”

I think people here have very media-driven views of these groups, which I guess fits the stereotype requests. I mainly just disagree with the hippie replies. I’m not sure why the northeast is the first place people think hippies should be found. I would say that the states with the highest former-hippie populations are California, New Mexico, Oregon, and New York (upstate), and maybe Vermont. I guess my view of hippies is dominated by the Ken Kesey/ Grateful dead model that is found mostly in New Mexico, California, and Oregon.

p.s my parents are both ex-hippies. Both born around '48/'49 and were in their twenties at the apex of hippie culture, 1969/1970.

Coolbrezze-
Where do you live? Most preps I know are Conservative because I live in the Bible Belt.

And if you’re so geared toward favoring “preps”, as you call them, then why even ask this question? Shouldn’t the person matter and not their style/personal opinions?

I live in Michigan. All preps I met are/ were liberal. Though hippie has change a lot, and many may be considered hipster. Though I don’t know much of a hipster.

Rather one is a hippie ( or hipster) or a prep, that’s not what matters. I actually never stated anywhere in this thread that such matters. I would just like to know others opinion of a hipster and a prep. There was questions I raised about each. Though never did I state it matters. Some people don’t even consider to be a prep or hipster.

Well, since Michigan is a liberal state, I’d assume that most people you know are liberal. Preps in the South are Conservative. Anyway, I guess a “hipster” is someone who dresses in bold/colorful/bright clothing. Where I live, people call them “scene.” They wear their little neon peace sign shirts and necklaces, but they have absolutely no idea what they’re attempting to represent. “Hipsters”, at best, are hippie poseurs and nothing more.

Hipster has nothing to do with hippies. Hipster is not scene, although they wear a few similar things. Scene has that trademark hair. Hipster jeans are not always skinny, unlike scene. Scene’s shirts tend to be 2 sizes smaller than hipster’s, but the actual design of the shirt is very much the same. I could go on.
