<p>Just curious, what brands or look do you think are preppy? This would help for one of my classes at school. I know it's weird, but it's part of a paper.</p>

<p>Abercrombie, hollister and aeropostale and buckle are not preppy. they may try to recreate preppy clothes, but real preppy is Ralph Lauren, Vineyard Vines, Lilly Pulitzer, J. Crew, Jim McLaughlin etc. Heres an urbandictionary definition that is pretty accurate:</p>

Abercrombie and Fitch, Express, American Eagle, The Limited, Guess, Aeropostale, etc.
HOWEVER: preppy items may be found at many of these locations (ex: nantucket red girls chinos at American Eagle)
Preppy (girls) essentials include:
ribbon belts,minimal makeup (or better, none), minimal hair styling, pearls, oxfords, polos, chinos, birkinstock clogs, sauconys, headbands, cableknit sweaters, brightly colored pants, cropped pants, jack rogers sandals, lilly pulitzer sundresses, longchamp/herve chapelier/vineyard vines/ll bean totes, patagonia fleeces, reef sandals, JCrew bathing suits, rainbow sandals,moccasins/topsiders, and many more.
preppy (boys) essentials include:
brightly colored baseball hats, rainbow sandals, Ralph Lauren polo shirts (in ALL colors- the brighter the better), nautical rope bracelets, nantucket red khakis, messy/unkempt hair (or minimal styling), other brightly colored khakis/shorts, crewneck sweaters, flannel/plaid oxfords, rope belts, striped ties, vineyard vines ties, LL bean boots, patagonia fleeces, navy blazers + khakis, topsiders, and much more.</p>

<p>Wannabe preppy is the Abercrombie stereotype that many people see as stuck up and generic, so I would have to say it is worse to be a wannabe prep. Real preps have more class and don't tend to show off their money as much as wannabes.</p>

<p>yeah..truly preppy people are classy dressers and they don't wear too much makeup. they come from the northeast in well-established families with old money. example: the kennedys.</p>
<p>the "abercrombie prep" variety is much more annoying. they just wear clothes that are too tight and obsessively straighten their hair and re-apply eyeliner.</p>
<p>don't get me wrong, i like my naturally wavy hair straight and eyeliner is cute if it's natural-looking--i'm just not going to kill myself to do it allllll the time lol</p>

<p>Whats up with the paragraph full of garbage? Anyway, preps are the ones with usually cropped hair, and wear A & F, AE, RL with the big pony logo, and a few lacostes. Funny thing, I love RL dress shirts (the best ever!), but I am definitely not a prep.</p>

<p>i definitely agree... there are so many trashy girls around here who claim that they are preppy but wear the sluttiest tight hollister clothes, straighten their fakeblond hair daily, and wear pounds of makeup. my real preppy friends go to boarding school in CT or NH and wear their hair natural and minimal makeup, and they are not at all materialistic. i have to admit though, i do own denim skirt from Abercrombie. i just think its tacky when people where shirts with huge logos that say "hollister" or "juicy."</p>
<p>haha i actually have 2 polo shirts..i like the way they fit, they come in a bajillion colors, and i can understand why they're so popular. i don't like to wear them exactly the same way as everyone else, though, so i wear fun jewelry and carry a fun purse so as not to look like a mindless clone :)</p>

<p>After reading Ali's post I feel absurdly lower-middle class, hah. Yay for being stuck in the SES of your parental units. </p>
