Hello everyone,
I am about to finish my general AA this summer and I want to transfer over to UCF for Mechanical Engineering. There is only one problem. I did not complete really any of the engineering prerequisites. I spoke with the coordinator for the engineering department and she said the only classes I needed to complete to transfer over were Calculus 1 and Physics 1. Before Calculus I have to take Trig and Precalc. I can't complete Physics until after I pass Calculus 1. This will probably take around three semesters to complete.
So my question is, how should I go about completing these prerequisites? Spend the next couple semesters at the local CC taking them? I have also applied to the FSU Social Science program, possibly finish my bachelors and prerequisites with them?
Any input or ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks!

If UCF will admit you with what you have at present, then go with UCF.

Okay, first of all, if you wanted to do engineering (or were considering it as a possibility) you really should have addressed the prereq’s long before this point. It’s like taking off in an airplane and THEN asking someone to teach you how to land it.

If I understand your post, you have two options:

1) Finish your prereq’s at the community college, then transfer to UCF for ME when you are done.

2) Transfer now to FSU’s Social Sciences program.

It is pretty straightforward - if you want to be an engineer, option 1 is the best way to get there from your current position. Option 2 will lead to a degree in a different field - I would not count on being able to switch into engineering at FSU (at many schools transferring into engineering is difficult or even prohibited!), and even if you do it will be just as slow and probably much more expensive than the other route.

You need the prereq’s, and unfortunately it looks like you are starting from the very bottom. Are you sure you want engineering? If you haven’t even taken trig this late in the game, I am not sure what makes you think this is a good choice for you.

If your CC is cheaper than UCF, then you may want to complete as much as you can at your CC before transferring to UCF. Based on http://www.cecs.ucf.edu/documents/programs/Mechanical.4YP.pdf and http://www.cecs.ucf.edu/documents/programs/Mechanical.FC.pdf , this probably means:

MAC 2311, 2312, 2313: Calculus 1, 2, 3
MAP 2302: Differential equations
PHY 2048C, 2049C: Physics 1, 2 for engineers
CHS 1440 or CHM 2045: Chemistry 1
ENC 1101, 1102: English composition 1, 2
SPC 1608: Oral communication
ECO 2013 or 2023: Economics
Additional “Social Foundations” and “Cultural and History Foundations” courses as required.

And any of the following that are available at your CC:

STA 3032: Probability and statistics
EGN 1006, 1007: Introduction to engineering
EGN 3310, 3601: Statics, solid mechanics
EML 3217: Dynamics
EGN 3343: Thermodynamics
EGN 3365: Properties of materials
EGN 3373: Principles of EE
EML 3500: Design of machine components
