prescreening videos on iphone with tripod?

Hi–so I am asking about recording prescreening videos for college. We will be in a good sound space that has a grand piano and will have a drummer and bass player who are pros. My son’s piano teacher will be there so we pick the best takes. But we are just going to film with iphone on tripod and mounting device. I guess there are places that you can have record the videos, but the recording studios the piano teacher was familiar with record audio only, and it was getting very complicated. We need to get the videos done now. The school websites say it can definitely be done on smartphone as long as it is stationary. I’m sure the musical quality of the videos will be excellent and hopefully the iphone as the camera is not an impediment. Someone mentioned that the GoPro might be better but while we have a GoPro, we are really not familiar with it and fear a mess up.

If anyone has any experience (having used the iphone for this), I’d feel better to hear it.

We’ve done that and it’s perfectly fine. My daughter is using her iPhone on a tripod to record her auditions for YoungArts this year since she doesn’t have access to a cheap studio in NYC like she had at home. It will be perfectly fine.

Great. Thank you!

My son did all his prescreens wth iPhone, and he passed all.

Yes we did that but we bought an external mic attachment.

We just filmed some voice prescreens. We used a dslr camera with a stereo digital recorder plugged in and did a backup copy on an iPad with no special attachments. Both worked fine. The audio from the dslr camera setup is noticeably better. It was harder to use than the iPad, and if we hadn’t had it available, we would have used just the iPad. Those recordings came out fine too. The digital recorder we used is a Tascam DR05.
