I always hear about wake's workload and the "work forest" atmosphere. Is this an accurate description or blown out of proportion? My son has a 3.75 in hs - through first sem. jr. year. He expects it to go up to 3.9(weighted)by this time next year. SATs around 2100. He wants a school that has good academic reputation but one that won't consume all of his time. ANy ideas on how he might do with this workload? (mgmt/mkt major or maybe english? What about Furman?

I am a mom, my D just finished her Freshman year and is flying home today!! My impression is that there is a lot of work (it’s college), but it is not like they are in the library all the time. I was talking to a friend who is a professor at a state school here in Ca, and when I told her what my daughter was doing for one of her classes, she said that it sounded like grad school work compared to what she gave her students.
However, there are also many opportunities to have fun. Greek life is strong and parties are frequent. The key is to be able to manage your time and not let the work or fun take over.

Here’s a link to an earlier thread on this topic, which seems to come up on a regular basis.

In many ways, Furman is “Wake Forest Lite.” 2700 undergrads instead of 4000, 1300 M+CR instead of 1350, and I-AA athletic instead of I-A. I wouldn’t be surprised if the academic rigor falls along this same pattern, but Furman is a quality LAC. Their acceptance rate to med school is around 70%. The two campuses are two of the most beautiful in the country, but even as a Wake alum I must acknowledge that Furman may actually have the edge there. Anyone interested in Wake would be well-advised to check out Furman too.

I’ve been to both Wake and Furman. The Wake entrance is very impressive. Wake and Furman are very similar. I have to agree with gadad, Furman has a slight edge only becuase it is so well put together. Part of a master plan back in the fifties.

Academically, both schools will challenge students. Its why you go there. I always get a kick when somebody says “I’m interested in such and such school but one that doenst take up all my time”.

In college, what “time” are folks worried about? Time in top colleges will be divided into:

School work
projects
internships
clubs
frats
sports
some fun and entertainment
etc.

this is it. The student must find the right balance between all of them. No one area should consume it all. Its a balance. The top 1/3 should consume most of the time. If the bottom third is the top priority dont expect good results
