Yeah, I am in India right now, meeting my family. Well, I have always known that my dad went to IIT Kanpur(sp?), which is the Indian Institute of Technology. A lot of people consider it harder to get into than MIT(which IIT is modeled after) because there are more than 3 million applicants, and only 100 get in. I recently found out that he pulled this off without preparing for the exams very hard, and was ranked 1st in the IIT Entrance exams...

it sucks because here, he is revered as a genius in his entire city, and everyone some how figured out that I am gonna take a shot at MIT. So now they all expect me to get into MIT, or Caltech, or IIT. Plus I am from "AMERICA!!!" so naturally they think, every aspect of my life is better, and thus I have no excuse not to get in.

mmmm...i hear ya. my mum went to iit-kharagpur, and then on to n.america for grad school. thank the gods i didn't go visit the family til after i got into mit (this past winter break, actually) tho they didn't appear to be all that impressed with either my mother or with me...her family is historically madly educated and successful, tho. shrug have fun over there. where are you, approximately?

Right now I am in Jubulpore, which is in state of MP(Madya Pradesh).

To make matters worst, he is bragging on my behalf, telling everyone about how I self-studied Calc BC. The ironic thing is he didn't even support me when I was actually doing it.

They don't apply like here. Everyone takes the exam. Then they cut out almost 90% of the applicants. Then they have the next exam, etc, total of 5 exams. There isn't any concern of EC, Sports, etc.

Besides, India has more than a billion people, so assuming that about 30 million people are within the age range to take IIT GATE Exams, and everyone wants to go to IIT, it is pretty reasonable.

I don't doubt the 3 million, I doubt the 100. Top 10% is 300,000 people. My uncle went to IIT and I don't think even he said it was as competitive as only 100 people get in.

I was close! I don't know, everyone here talks in Lakhs and Crores, and I am thinking in millions and billions. Sometimes I make simple arithmetic mistakes!

IT's JUST A MAGNITUDE OF 10 LESS!!! lol

Well, I will inform my cousin about his err. He is studying for it now.

Well I should make things clear, since it seems ppl are not willing to believe the numbers -

of test takes - ~300,000

who qualify first round - ~12,000

who qualify second round - ~3500

who get admitted to each of the 7 IITs = ~500

Kharagpur, Kanpur take around 450 each year. These two are the most sought-after.

Note that this is just dividing 3500/7, in reality many students (typically those who get ranks 2500+) do not take admission; instead, they sit for the test again next year to get a better rank. Here you cannot choose your campus or even major and be certain of getting that, since your All India Rank in the test dictates what you "get".

So yeah, for any particular campus of IIT, it's ~450-500 out of 300,000 aspirants.

If you think that is massacre, look at stats for entrance tests of University of Seoul, Tokyo Int. of Tech etc... you will be amazed. Suicides are commonplace.

whoa... dang. Yeah, I read about this guy in the paper this morning that topped the IIT JEET(sp?), the All India Engineering Exam, and one more. I think he was from Allahabad.

My dad went to Kanpur. Does anyone know if it is possible to take the JEE from the U.S.? I am sure people apply from here, so how do they? I would rather like to go to IIT...

are you? i'm not; in fact, i can't think of any reason why anyone educated in the US would apply to IIT (ok, aside from those who are in the US just for high school, and even then, i'd imagine they'd go back to india for a year more). my skepticism is, however, born of a rather incomplete perception of the relevant educational systems. why d'you want to, if you don't mind my asking?

goddess32585, you would be amazed to see how good some of those kids from India. Personally, I see myself having a higher chance to get into MIT than IIT Kanpur:

A) I don't perform well on sit down exams. I do better on stuff when I have time to think about it.

B) I can't sit and study all the time like my cousins. A vast percentage of my time is spent perusing the internet on new technology, etc, and thinking about it.

C) I find it impossible to sit down and study for the SAT. I just don't see the point of studying for it, seeing as I won't use that stuff later on in life.

sagar, I have a friend who is going through same thing... His dad went to IIT Chennai (i think i donno for sure) and now his dads is expecting him to goto IVY leagues.
Sagar, sometimes do you feel we would have gotten a better, if not more excelled education back in India?
I mean my cousin who is same age as me (16) just grauated from his Engineering College and I was like WHAT THE F*** :)

sagar you mention that your Dad went to IIT without studying, well no offence mate but the IIT's have gotten tougher as the years went by(directly proportional to population).

There's nothing great about the IIT's, the peer group is admittedly really really smart, but everything else just about sucks. And being in IIT doesnt guarantee a good life. Thats why out of the 500 or so who graduate, only about 50 get good jobs, many of the rest become teachers in tuition classes.

You shouldnt really listen to your Indian family, all Indian families have a thing for putting pressure. What you should know is that wherever you go, 3 things are very important for getting a job-1)Charisma,2)Experience, 3)Connections.Get these 3 right and you'll get a job anywhere.

About the 16 yr old cousin graduating-now you're just exaggerating!

If you get into IIT through NRI reservation, I guarantee you you will be ragged. People here absolutely detest reservationists(if you will). Thats coz most of us study our asses off and end up being ousted from a seat by someone of less calibre who got in because their daddys a politician or some such.
