CMC is an excellent school with famous economics and government departments. That said, it makes me wonder why no one outside of California has ever heard of it. About 50% of its students are from Cali. Most people have heard of Pomona and Harvey Mudd but not Claremont McKenna. Why is this? Perhaps CMC should hire a PR company and reach out to the rest of the nation more.

The school is very young in comparison to other LACs, and it is not that people havent heard of it. I think its more that it is specifically catered to a focused group of students with a shared interest in economics.

Most people have heard of Pomona and Harvey Mudd?

Yeah, OK. But I'm from Michigan and know the whole consortium, so someone knows :)

And it already has an acceptance rate of about 20%, it isn't begging for students or anything.

I don't really think that most people have heard of Pomona or Harvey Mudd (or most LACs for that matter). Most people in California think that Pomona College is the same thing as Cal Poly Pomona.

The average person just doesn't know much about liberal arts colleges, except for maybe one that they happened to have heard of because a friend or relative went there. Because big research universities often have famous sports teams, several graduate schools, and massive student bodies, they tend to be more famous to the general public. But that doesn't mean that they offer a better undergrad education than a small LAC. The people who matter (i.e. grad schools and competitive employers) will know about CMC. Sure, you don't get to brag to your relatives about going to a famous school, but how important is that really?

Also, only about 40% of CMC students are in-state, which is less than the percent at Stanford. So it's not like its just a regional school. Remember that California is a big state, so even schools in the east usually have a good amount of CA students.

let me tell you this - approach someone on a street and theyll have no clue, approach someone at a higher position and theyll know about it. seriously. i talk to some of my friends on the east coast and they have no idea about the school, but the people running internships and hiring for jobs and such know about it. where it matters, people know
