oh my mistake, i thought you guys were talking about good schools, not just prestigious ones. Although i guess it doesn't matter much for me, because i plan on going to grad school anyway.

My list above is pretty comprehensive. Look at it, you may see Wesleyan in it.

To Shrek: As an academic at one the very institutions that you deem prestigious, I feel obliged to inform you that places of higher learning such as Carleton, Swarthmore or Haverford have greater prestige among graduate departments, academics in general or job recruiters than those you deem "prestigious." If you define prestige as the colleges or universities that most Americans have "heard of," then you have a lot to learn, IMHO. I define as prestigious those institutions that are highly regarded among those who are educated about the topic at hand.

wake forest, vandy, tufts

Carlmom, I do not see how Carleton, Swarthmore, Haverford etc... are more prestigious than Chicago, Johns Hopkins, MIT, CalTech, Duke, Northwestern, Rice or Stanford (the schools that Shrek mentioned). They may be as prestigious, but not more.

Shrek, if your councelor does not know and respect Williams, he/she is not qualified to be a counselor. Any counselor that rates Williams less than a top university is ignorant.

he also mentioned Georgetown....
lol, i'm just saying :)

I doubt Carleton or Haverford are looked upon more highly than some of the top private/public universities, since they are smaller and I've never heard of them

Swarthmore rocks though!

"I'm not too certain about USC. It's a great football school, but beyond that? Prestige? I'm sorry."

I agree.

I agree with Carlmom that the prestige of a particular school is better determined by it's reputation among employers/graduate schools than among the "common folk". The average person can't name all 8 Ivies, let alone recognize most of the other name-brand colleges in the top 25. I wish I had a dime for every time I tell someone I'm going to UPenn and they ask why on earth I want to pay out of state tuition. :>)

I agree NonAbsolute. Only academics and corporate recruiters matter in determining reputation/prestige.

Speaking of GC and Williams, my GC just was invited (for the first time) to go see Williams on the Counselor's trip. I'm trying to convince him the fact that three people applied there for the first time from our school has something to do with it. He insists its his ego. :P

wesleyan is a really presitigous school in the US. if you want to, read the book the gatekeeper; it will tell you just how competitive wesleyan is. it's one of the top 10 lacs

This nonsence with the lower ivies or dormant ivies is just ridiculous. That is essentially what all the ppl that are not in the ivy league say to try to demean the accomplishments of those that attend places like Penn, Cornell, Dartmouth, Columbia, and Brown. I would like to point out, that this "prestige" business is nonsense. Go look on the Duke board, and all you see is kids saying yeah, Duke wins in cross-admits 65 to 35 with x, y, z and others saying yeah Duke is the same as Penn/Columbia. I mean, who freaking cares. It's all a bunch of garbage. To be frank, I never knew how good Duke was until I came to these forums. Does that make me ignorant or a person worthy of attack by fellow CCers when I make my assertions? Plz ppl, be happy where you are going to college and enjoy the next 4 years, b/c they are going to rock!!

Cornell c/o 2009

well, thats because dukies feel that they've outgrown the ACC and its time for the Ivy League to add a Southern compardre :)

just kidding

In terms of admits, Duke is similar to Penn and Columbia, i think thats that it means

To whoever asked the question about Wesleyan: Yes it is rather prestigious.

Wesleyan's commencement speaker is...Penn's president, Amy Gutmann. (and Penn is not HYP and at best can compete with the lower Ivies and Stanford/Duke/MIT)... Definitely shows the hierarchy of things

Gutmann was invited to speak at Wesleyan's commencement because she is an outspoken proponent of greater access to higher education, especially need-blind financial aid, not necessarily because she's Penn's president.

collegekid1988;

What the heck is a "dormant" Ivy?

That is essentially what all the ppl that are not in the ivy league say to try to demean the accomplishments of those that attend places like Penn, Cornell, Dartmouth, Columbia, and Brown.

-Ah yes, because everyone who isnt in the Ivy league is just jealous of those who are. Ridiculous.

thats sort of weird asking another colleges president to speak, but i'm sure she's really smart and cool and has interesting things to say and that her status as president at Penn isn't the only reason

Hey guys, University of Rochester was listed in the prestigious list by an earlier poster, and I just wanted to get your opinions. Its an interesting school in that, its not as well known as its counterparts washU , etc, but very well known in the circle of academia. Grad schools, med schools, etc. I'm c/o 2009 , and I know it has a strong premed and it fit well with my needs, but I never heard of the school until I searched for good premeds and visited. Before I was just blindly applying to "well heard of schools" such as duke, nyu, ivies, etc. Just curious as to what are your opinions on UR, from an outsider perspective.

Thanks in advance
