prestigious summer programs?

" Whatever you do over the summer for summer programs, ask yourself how it will be useful to you 10 years down the road."

"Well, maybe not that extreme."

Ok howabout 5? But no lower than 3. That wouldn't do.

To differential and others - why do we need to know that what we do now will be valuable to us in the future? What about spending our summers doing what we love and what we find interesting, and spending time with like-minded individuals?

maybe they meant don't just think about college, think about doing something that you won't regret later in life b/c u wasted a whole summer in high school doing something that you don't like

lol, and RSI isn't like college, where essays and recs and interest can make up for a lack of science/math awards, rite ? :)

rsi is just looking for perfection unlike college. keep in mind that there were only two people from NJ in RSI last year, and they rejected 1/2 of the kids with perfect PSAT scores.

lol, dang. maybe i'll apply anyways, even a rejection letter from RSI will probably make me feel smart :)

SSP pwns. Socorro >> Ojai, though.

"Quote:

What kind of an advise is that? How do you know what you'll become 10 yrs from now? It's all about trying stuff, and the lion's share of summer activities is probably interact with other intellectual students. Acquiring skills is also important. Just curious, are you a admissions officer, a student, or what?
And I'll decide whether I want to chill out or not thank you."

Well it's not as dramatically hard as you're making it out to be to do something useful with your time over the summer. Do something intense. Learn a language. Read some really good books. Learn a new math trick. Learn some crazy lab skills. Build a tree house. These things teach you subtle skills you won't learn in the classroom. But don't just sit on your ass in front of a TV. And for that matter, I don't advise spending your entire summer just chilling with friends and doing nothing but just "hanging out." That's what the summer between senior year and college is for. Do something that engages you in SOME way over the summer, whether it's a job, a summer program, or just some creative project at home.

And by all means you can do w/e the **** you want over the summer. I'm not an adcom, just someone from the internets giving what I think is good advice on a college discussion forum to people who are asking for advice.

I really don't think that "RSI looks for perfection." That wasn't my experience anyways.

lol..but i still have no chance

Ok, thank you differential. I think I really got messed up that day when I posted. I might have used harsh words. It's totally not like me. Thank you, my man.

well thanks guys. im also going to apply to the MIT WTP program. do u think w/ my stats i could get in?

I'm an IB student just about to finish my first year. Want to know if anyone has any ideas concerning summer program which look good on college applications. Also suggest anything useful besides a program which I could use my summer for........... Thanks

yo! I had applied to a bunch of those summer programs, and I was REJECTED from every one of them except University of Iowa's Student Secondary Training program...but it was cancelled because of the flooding...so, instead, I ended up at a Harvard Medical School hopsital working with a MIT professor on a project. And no, I had no connections to the professor or the hospital. All I did was to email, spam, and ask the professors....

so, don't be disheartened if you don't get into any summer programs. Find a local professor you can work with, or in a city near to you. And I got into MIT Early action!!!!!! xD xD

Yay, I like bumping up old threads and reviving them as well…

Consider:
Florida State Univ. Young Scholars Program
University of Florida SSTP

In general, a summer program where acceptance is based on payment alone is worth a lot less than one with a competitive application process.

These programs certainly do not guarantee an acceptance anywhere, but show a love of learning and challenging yourself beyond the school year.

Hi. Speaking of summer math/science programs, anyone have any input on HCSSiM, a math camp at Hampshire College in Amherst, Ma? After reading all previous posts, i did not see any mention of this one. From their website, it looks like a great program, but not sure about the intensity. My son is very much into math/science and computers and wants to attend a rigorous program since he is advanced in Math and Computer Programming for his age.
Thanks to all in advance!

Ivy Scholars at Yale

Neuron, I agree with you. Is that program o ly for FL teens?
