Prestigious undergrad = prestigious grad school?

This question has been bothering me for a while.

Will a prestigious undergraduate school guarantee or facilitate admission to a prestigious grad school? Or is it equally as difficult to get into a top 10 grad school from a top 10 undergrad school as it is from a 30s undergrad school?

Well, I would have to agree with your first equation; however, if you go to an "ok" school then that wouldn't stop you from being admitted into a prestigious grad school. The thing with prestigious undergrad= prestigious graduate is that a great undergrad imples that you have had some rigor in your coursework. In many ways, it's like high school, where the kids with the better high school do better on the SATs/entrace exams and get admitted to the "great" colleges.

If you have a great application, good teacher recs, etc., any school where you get a good education and work your butt off can be a springboard to a great grad school. For heaven's sake, don't expect that a Harvard degree will guarantee you a place in any grad school: you'll still need to work hard on your application!

Think of it this way:

By the time you apply for graduate school, will graduate school admissions care if you got good grades in high school or scored high on the SAT?

If it's soley for the sake of prestige, it won't help. However, more "prestigious" schools generally have stronger academics and resources, which would help graduate school admissions.
