I have been attempting to write my college essays for a while now, with no success. I have no shortage of material (been through kind of a lot: cancer, divorce, father attempted suicide, mother has seizures, major job loss, personal experience with injustice related to child abuse). The problem is, any time I try to write about any topic (not just these experiences) it comes off as cynical and hardened because I'm currently so frustrated with everything that's going on.

I can't really figure out how to solve this problem and write an essay that presents me in a good light.

Any suggestions? They would be greatly appreciated.

i’m sure it is very frustrating for you with all of these problems. if you can write about how these difficulties have made you a better person or brought out one of your great traits, then that would be a good idea. i’m sure you can write a great essay. good luck!

I totally understand your frustration. I’m really struggling with my essays right now and it sucks. You certainly have a lot to write about so i would try to draft a few different essays on different topics and see which one you connect most with. I know its easy to get frustrated and that could affect your tone, but take a step back for a second and think how these topics have affected you and made you grow as a person. Introduce the topic in the first paragraph. Then discuss its effect on you. Then write an epiphany you had/lesson you learned from it. Then write about how that lesson has helped you grow and become a better person. Best of luck. You have a lot to work with, i’m sure you will pull through with a great essay.
