Priceline.com to book flights to auditions?

Hi Everyone,

I'm in the process of booking flights to Rochester and North Carolina and am pressed for cash. Checked out priceline.com and it seems legit and not especially complicated. The savings are substantial as compared to booking flights directly from the carrier. There will be three of us and I need to save where I can. Can't send my son alone as there will be some driving involved, plus I'm not the world's most confident driver. Anyone have any experience with Priceline? I know they've been around a long time, but a vote of confidence would be nice.

Are you bidding or getting a set price? I personally bid on the cars and hotels, but don’t like that I don’t know the time of my flight with the flying option. If you are just using them to purchase tickets I think they will be fine. Have you checked prices at Southwest? For our trip they were the cheapest option and they have a policy where you can change your flights if you need to.

Thanks Annie. We will be purchasing them at a set price. The savings are approximately $75 per ticket.

Are there lots of connections on those flights? Flying mid winter you probably want to minimize the chance for delays and/or cancellations, since you won’t have any wiggle room for when you need to be there. It may not be worth the savings, to have the anxiety or a flight so many hours longer that your son arrives stressed and tired. Don’t forget that a good audition can be worth thousands in merit money - to more than make up for the cost of the flights.

I agree with SpiritManager, make sure that you don’t have too many connections. I am assuming it will be direct since it is a short hop. Good luck.

Both flights are nonstop with no connections. I’ve been done that road before and it’s not pretty. Also, we’re flying the day before his auditions in both instances. These are short flights. My main concern is with Priceline. Wondering if others have used it. Will also pray that it doesn’t snow!

Wow - you live somewhere with nonstop flights to Rochester and North Carolina? So different for those of us on the West Coast with music kids! Sounds like Priceline is the way to go, if you know what you’re bidding on. Are there any flights you would hate to take - i.e. leave too early or arrive too late? If not, I think you should take the savings.

Yes, I agree with SpiritManager and am very jealous of those of you on the East Coast! We have to get off an island first which is always another layer of complexity (cost/weather). Bachmom, I have never used Priceline but have used Expedia many times and never had any troubles. I believe Expedia is a Canadian version of sites like Orbitz and Priceline.

One of the best things about living in NJ is the proximity to Newark Airport and NYC! I’m going to book with Priceline. Thanks everyone!

Just did some checking and it looks like there is also an Expedia.com site. You could check it out to compare with the prices you are getting on Priceline. As I said in my earlier post, I have never had any troubles with Expedia.

It’ll will be fine Bachmom. We are also choosing to go the day before when we go. I hope your trip goes well.

Good luck to you too, Annie!

I’ve used priceline for flights quite a few times – set price, never bidding because I never had the time flexibility – even for a few auditions last year. No problems.

LOL I live in Rochester and there aren’t very many direct flights in and out of here! The only reason they can call it an “international” airport is because you can fly to Toronto. Rochester is a great city but we are really just a big small town.

Do they actually have a flight to Toronto now, dembrooks?! I remember when they made a big deal out of renaming the airport and then, the airline flying to Toronto pulled out of Rochester, leaving Monroe County with the signs, and not much else!

I was trying to book a trip between NYC and Cancun. the lowest price turned out to be $450, but it had a stop over at Raleigh for 15 hours. I was thinking of using Priceline, but I was concerned with getting a flight with over 20 hrs traveling time from NYC to Cancun.
