As much as I hope Princeton hits #1, that "proof" is extremely sketchy--anyone with photoshop can change the 06 into 07. It is just coincidence that the "rankings" are super blurry but the cover isn't?

JTC, I'm afraid that I have to agree with you and the other doubters here (including Byerly!). The actual results will be released soon so it really matters very little. However, if you look carefully, youll see that the image supplied in support of this: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showpost.php?p=2833223&postcount=48 shows a cover stating that more than 1,400 colleges are reviewed. The references on the U.S. News website http://www.usnews.com/usnews/store/products/collegepreorder_index.htm refer to over 1,900 schools being reviewed in the 2007 edition. The difference makes it appear suspect. This may mean nothing or it may reveal that a little more photo editing needed to be done!

At any rate, there's not much reason to comment until after the official list is released.

Interestingly the pre-order link page shows the 2007 edition in yellow (same as the 2006). As the 2006 edition rates 1400 schools it would seem unlikely they would find 500 additional schools out there.

Regardless of the rankings, the fact remains that a significant part of USNWR's base data - such as that on student to faculty ratios - overlooks certain differences in the way faculty are counted among universities and therefore is simply invalid.

Byerly is trying.so.hard.

No, PosterX, where is falls short are in two major categories:

"faculty resources" and "selectivity."

Check this thread:

I swear I have the rankings and that I am telling the truth. Here's a much better picture of them that I just scanned:

Congrats Princeton! :)

Calidan, as I wrote on the other thread, you've convinced me. Please accept my apologies for doubting you!

Thanks, but you really don't need to! You were completely justified to believe they weren't out yet.

IT'S TRUE.

I was a skeptic, but I got an early copy of the 2007 U.S. News and World Report America's Best Colleges, and Princeton is in fact ranked number one. The picture was not a fake. Well, there goes its early admission acceptance rate...

Princeton won't see a sizable jump in ED applications next year. Remember, it was already #1.

What will happen, though, is that we can expect Penn's growth in decreasing acceptance rate, number of applications and yield to slow down somewhat. Duke, of course, has already seen that because 125 were admitted from the waitlist.

Over the demographic hump perhaps? Children of the baby boomers levelling out?

Or has another group of schools begun to seize their 15 minutes?

In any case congratulations, Princeton. Certainly deserved for method of undergraduate education, though this Columbian would dispute such rankings for content :-)

I don't think so. The peak of the echo boom is going to be the class of 2014? Not for a few more years yet.

Hey pyro, who are you? :-P I haven't figured it out yet.

Woot!! Go Princeton!! :)

Sweet view...

yay for us! not like we didnt know we were better than harvard already. =P

Compared to the other Ivies and top schools, and Yale and MIT in particular, Princeton's selectivity has been dropping like a rock in recent years. I'm not saying it hasn't gotten slightly more selective, but simply hasn't been able to keep up. It's pretty much like a stock that's stayed flat while the rest of the market has doubled in value.

I don't think being ranked #1 by USNWR (which uses incorrect data and is therefore invalid - and, incidentally, has Princeton alumni doing its number crunching) will help much, given that Princeton has been ranked #1 by that publication for many years now.

Washington Monthly's new rankings, in which Princeton fell flat (far behind its rivals, in particular MIT, Stanford, Yale and Cornell) and didn't make the top 40 may hurt a bit.

Poster X,

Buck up, little camper! The sun will still rise tomorrow. You're going to be OK.

Since when was Cornell Princeton's rival in anything but drinking--in which Cornell wins quite handily?
