Princeton FAQ: Get your questions answered by current students

And sub free in a single sex tower worked great for my liberal son! :slight_smile:

@Cantiger Thank you for your advice. We visited their welcome event last week. All the students we met are genuinely very nice and smart. Impressed. Great school, excellent students, for sure.

Hello! Iā€™m new to this website, (a friend recently recommended this to me) and my dream university is Princeton. Iā€™m assuming you are parents, and if you have the time, could you perhaps tell me your childrenā€™s statistics and extracurricular activities they did?

@starray welcome! Iā€™d look at the recent 2022, 2021, etc. accepted threads in the Princeton Forum. Plenty of info to be found. Why is Princeton your dream school? Iā€™d start with that, before looking up stats.

@psywar Thank you for the welcome! And why do I want to go to Princeton? Well, itā€™s actually for a couple of reasons. I really want to experience the rigorous and competitive style of an Ivy League college, and Princeton is one of the closest to my area, so I wonā€™t have to pay for dorm expenses. Also, Princetonā€™s math and science program is ranked number one out of all the other universities, and which Iā€™m ecstatic about, since Iā€™m pursuing my career in the mathematical field, (Iā€™m hoping to a math professor if I can.)

@Starray math is great program at Princeton. Regarding your idea on dorm expenses, youā€™ll be required to stay on campus at least your first two years: ā€œFirst- and second-year students are required to live on campus, and nearly all juniors and seniors choose to live in on-campus housing.ā€ (https://admission.princeton.edu/campus-life/housing)

@psywar Really? I never knew that! Thank you for that piece of information! Itā€™s really helpful. I hope housing isnā€™t too pricy. I desire to get a scholarship to Princeton, but I feel like Iā€™m aiming too high. If you donā€™t mind me asking, do you attend Princeton? I have a few years until application, and Iā€™m curious about what extracurricular activities I should do. Also, my school doesnā€™t offer AP classes, so do you think that it would make me a lesser candidate for college? (Once again, thank you for taking the time to answer my questions!)

@Starray

The most current (Class of 2022) Princeton expenses:

Tuition $49,450
Room $9,520
Board $6,840
Residential College Fee $890
Books and Personal Expenses $3,500
Travel Costs $ Depends on where you live

Total Student Budget ca $72,000

@Starray
Princeton considers the time you spend with your classmates to be an important part of the Princeton experience. Many activities are centered on your residential college. The financial aid is generous so that all students can participate in all campus activities. The average grant per year exceeds $50,000. Follow this link to Launch the Estimator. https://admission.princeton.edu/cost-aid Your parents can use the Estimator to estimate the amount of financial aid you would qualify for if you are admitted. Scholarships are provided to all admitted students based on financial need. Scholarships are NOT limited to a few highly ranked students. If you are admitted you will be able to afford to attend Princeton, live in a residential college, and graduate debt free. Princeton expects that you will take the most rigorous courses offered by your high school. When Princeton accepts students from high schools that do not offer advanced courses the admitted students may be advised to attend the Freshman Scholars Institute (FSI) . https://fsi.princeton.edu/what-fsi FSI enables students that have not had the opportunity to take advanced courses to ā€œcatch upā€ with their freshman peers. The math department is truly outstanding.

Hello,
I am a Turkish student from an American High school, and I was going to ask that is submitting an art portfolio beneficial at all? I have compositions written for full symphonic orchestras, so would submitting those scores help?
Also, I want to study mathematics and I got a youtube channel where I introduce basics of complex analysis (Limits, Continuity, Complex Differentiation, Cauchy Riemann Equations are the topics I have covered so far) How would I show this in my application, or would showing these help my application?

Thanks

@alpgrunes in short, yes, submitting an art portfolio can definitely be beneficial. Obviously the boost you get depends on your level of skill and other qualitative factors about yourself, such as your race/SES. I submitted a recording of myself playing a cello concerto when I applied 2 years ago - I donā€™t play cello anymore, and I definitely wasnā€™t virtuoso-level when I recorded my supplement, but I believe I was decent and I was accepted to Princeton. I think compositions for full symphonic orchestras are very impressive, and could definitely help your application.

As for the second part of your question, if you were to show your Youtube channel in your app, it would probably go under the extracurriculars section. When I applied, the common let you list up to 10 extracurricular activities - putting something like a complex math tutorial youtube channel is (imo) pretty unique, and shows initiative and creativity, and if you donā€™t already have 10 extracurriculars, Iā€™d list it there. Iā€™d probably call it something like ā€œComplex Math Tutoringā€ or something.

Hi everyone! Prefrosh here with a question. Given that Princetonā€™s classes are known for their academic rigor, how should I prepare for such a transition as an incoming freshman? As a bit of background info, I came from a challenging, fairly grade-deflationary prep school in the West Coast, and Iā€™m tentatively a CS BSE major. Iā€™m thinking of taking COS 126, PHY 103, MAT 201, and a writing seminar in the fall, which shouldnā€™t be that bad since I already took multivariate calc in senior year and AP CS in sophomore year. Thanks in advance!

@samosalover academically youā€™ll be fine, enjoy your summer!

With regards to BSE COS, why BSE over AB?

For specific feedback on your classes, try googling ā€œrealtalk Princetonā€ (a very vibrant Q&A-based tumblr blog run by current student).

@psywar

Iā€™m sorry I just noticed your question!! Iā€™m very split between BSE / AB COS, and Iā€™m also considering ORFE, Econ, and Woody Woo as potential majors. Iā€™m currently BSE because I want to explore as many options as possible, and itā€™s easier to transfer from BSE to AB than vice versa. I already plan on taking higher level math classes at Princeton since I enjoyed them in high school, and I want to try out calculus-based physics for the first time. I want to sample a little bit of everything (creative writing, sociology, etc. Princeton is good at everything) and Iā€™m not scared of getting a few bad grades. That being said, if I switch to AB I might consider being prelaw, in which case GPA becomes very important, but I want to make sure I actually want to attend law school first.

And realtalk-princeton is awesome!! It played a definite part in my decision to attend Princeton over Yale, Duke, JHU, CMU and 4 other Ivies. The love for Princeton among students and alumni both here on CC and in real life is incredibly strong, and I canā€™t wait to be part of that experience this fall. :slight_smile:

Hey guys! Iā€™m an incoming student for the Class of 2022 planning on majoring in Economics. Iā€™m stuck between taking General Chemistry I and Intro to Psychology for my STL requirement. Is GenChem really hard at Princeton? I have previous AP experience in chemistry, but no experience in psychology. But in the long run will psychology be better for my GPA? If I take GenChem I Iā€™ll probably do GenChem II in the spring for my other STN requirement. Thanks! Hope to hear from you soon!

@surp69 For specific feedback on your classes, try googling ā€œrealtalk Princetonā€ (a very vibrant Q&A-based tumblr blog run by current student).

My advice is to not think of this choice in terms of ā€œreally hardā€ vs. ā€œbetter for my GPAā€, but rather as an opportunity to explore topics for the sake expanding your horizons.

HALLO!

Iā€™m applying to Princeton RD and the essay prompt Iā€™m responding to is ā€œtell us someone who is influential to you and whyā€.

The absolute 100% best possible essay I could write for this would be on my sophomore history teacher. However, sheā€™s also writing my teacher recc. Is this sus?

@cuteraspberries - I think this is not the best idea. If your essay depends on writing about this person, then at the very least, have her rec be a supplemental rec and not the main teacher one.

Yesterday I did financial aid application for my son. Among other things it was need to enter data about his school in 2018-2019. After I applied in saved pdf below this record I found also:
ā€œ2019-20 Enrolled
School Name Princeton University
Year in School College Fr.
Enrollment Status Full-Time
Semesters Full Acad Yrā€
I mean that I didnā€™t typed anything of this. Its appeared on its own.
And in confirmation email stated Student Number though in previous emails Princeton used Reference Number.
Can it have some meaning? Or that is just ā€œjokeā€ of Princeton software?
