Princeton Humanities Sequence and BSE

I enrolled in Princeton as a member of the Class of 2020, and could not be more excited! I recently received information about the school’s Humanities Sequence, and though it looks like an extremely challenging course, it appeals to me tremendously. For my major, I am deciding between Civil Engineering and Geosciences. Is it possible to complete the Humanities Sequence while in a BSE program? Based on the requirements for each, it looks very difficult. Thanks in advance!

My daughter is a freshman at Princeton and is taking the Humanities Sequence (HUM 216-219). She is an AB degree candidate and absolutely loves this course! I asked her your question, and she told me that yes, it is possible to take the HUM sequence as a BSE degree candidate- there are engineering students in the course with her. She said you have to take engineering requirements too, and having AP credits for science and/or math helps.

Are you going to Princeton Preview? She told me there will be a panel on the HUM sequence, as well as an engineering panel.

If you are a member of the Princeton class of 2020 Facebook group, you could try posting your question there too. Current students are members of that group and someone may be able to answer you in more detail.

Before my daughter attended Preview last year, she emailed a contact person for the department she was interested in concentrating in. She was able to set up an appointment to meet with a professor during Preview, during a time when she wasn’t attending a panel or other scheduled event. You could do this for Geoscience! The faculty at Princeton are very happy to talk to students. (As my daughter puts it, Princeton is “all about the undergrads!”) Even if you are attending Preview tomorrow, you might be able to set something up if you send the email tonight- if not for tomorrow, maybe for Tuesday morning before you leave campus.

If you are attending the second Preview, the lecture portion of the HUM sequence meets Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 10 AM, and you can attend a lecture!

Congratulations on your admission to Princeton, and get ready for an exciting four years!

@NJMom97 - thank you for all of those answers as I’m also watching this thread with a similar question. Do you know how we can see a Preview schedule and also, how do you know where/when the HUM sequence meets?

@fretfulmother I’m sorry for the late reply to your question. The HUM panel at Princeton Preview on April 20 will be at 2:30 PM in East Pyne 010. The lecture portion of the course is also in East Pyne 010, TuWedThu at 10 AM. Hopefully you have received, or will soon receive, the full schedule for Preview by email from Princeton. There will be printed schedules available at check-in (I’m remembering this from last year). I hope you have a terrific time at Princeton Preview!

Btw, the lead story today on the Princeton University website is a video about Celebrating 100 Years of Jewish Life at Princeton. (I can’t figure out how to post links on CC- perhaps because I am on my phone?)

Thank you!!! @NJMom97

@NJMom97 - to follow up - I saw that excellent video and sent to lots of family and friends who were iffy on “a Jewish boy heading to P”.

Thank you everyone! I attended the presentation, and the sequence looks incredible! It looks like I might have to try to take it sophomore year, as I would never fit it in to my frosh schedule. Thanks again!
