Just how preppy is Princeton and btw what are the other ivies like??

Depending what you mean by "preppy." No one ostentatiously flaunts wealth, and there are more popped collars in my public Southern California high school than there are at Princeton. There is absolutely no sense of upward-tilting noses among the student population unless you look really really ridiculously hard for the oddballs in the freshman class (and even then, those noses return to the proper level once midterm exams are handed back :p ). If, however, by preppy you mean "clean-cut, polite, and genuinely nice," that would include the majority of the student body.

Several years ago, President Tilghman did call for more "green hair" on campus -- I suppose, less of the "dress like your parents, except with flip-flops" look but it hasn't really happened, and it looks like we're never going to let her live it down. But if you want to come to Pton wearing a green mullet, I'm sure President Shirley and most other people would think it's pretty cool.

^and thats one of the reasons i love P-ton!

lol! send a picture of yourself with your application

of course, send the picture with green hair ;)

wow this post took me like two minutes to type out because my fingers are frozen >.<

y did this post die out so fast?

we need more opinions, IS PRINCETON PREPPY WITH WACKO PREP SCHOOL RICH DUDES?

most people dress really nicely every day. i don't. sweatshirt and jeans, usually.

Are people as super rich as the rumors say?

I can safely say that its not particularly hard to find the stereotypical preppy scene on campus, but it does not dominate the school at all. In fact, I'd say its a shrinking presence. However, it is true that many people do dress nicely, even to class, and its possible that if you visited campus during Lawn Parties or House Parties you might just call me a liar. The preppy factor is kept well under control.

tokyorevelation, that is exactly what I wanted to hear! It's not that I don't feel comfortably around preppy people (I certainly do), it's that I'm not particularly preppy myself (though if I had to "label" myself anything, I guess I would lean that way). Looks like I'll fit in just fine! :)

If you want, you can wear your pajamas to breakfast/lunch/whereever you go after you wake up. But I don't see why you would want to, because it's snowing outside.

it's not as preppy as i thought it was. i see a ton of converse shoes.

in fact, my high school is preppier than this place...

What exactly is meant by people dress "really nicely" everyday? I'm just wondering what that means...at my high school most people (or at least my friends) and I just wear like nice jeans and a Ralph Lauren/Lacoste polo pretty much every day, which is, I'm assuming, the definition of this "preppy" thing. Do people dress like that often at Princeton?

When I was there, a surprising number of people were wearing Princeton apparel (hoodies, sweatpants, and the like), much more so than at any other school I visited. My tour guide wore a rather stylish white wool coat. I'm sure it varies.

Yeah, when I was there I saw a TON of Princeton gear...which meant a lot of sweatpants, sweatshirts, and other casual stuff. It was actually a lot less preppy than I expected; I mostly saw people who were dressed the way peachykween dresses, not the way (s)he says most people do. I went to an Intro Psych lecture and there was a huge variety...a few sundresses and things like that (it was a warm day in the beginning of October) but mostly sweats, jeans, and some PJs (it was about 11 AM, I think).

As for dressing nicely, just think of those annoying J.Crew ads/catalogs. That kind of smart casual look is pretty pervasive. People wear collared shirts, sweaters, and sweater-vests more than polos or other related apparel.

Basically you will either see people wear the whole Princeton gear shabang and look like their going to work out (when they are really not) or they will look more intellectual in the way I described. Of course the pants of choice are jeans, but they are usually not baggy at all.

haha well maybe it's just perspective, then...my high school was really not preppy, at all, and few people dressed as consistently "nicely" there than they do at princeton. By "really nicely" I mean (for girls) boots, tights/nice jeans, dresses when it's warmer, nice blouses, "fashionable" jackets and nicely groomed hair. Actually when I think about it, the men are pretty much more laid back and often sport the jeans/sweatshirt deal.
I proudly sport my obnoxiously black/orange scarf.

Haha "I proudly sport my obnoxiously black/orange scarf."

No joke, that statement alone makes me want to go to Princeton. I want to sport an obnoxiously black/orange scarf too!!!
